webfact Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 TAT: Tuesday blackout has posed no impact on Thai tourismBANGKOK, 23 May 2013 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has come out to assure that the blackout that hit 14 southern Provinces on Tuesday has not had any impact on the tourism sector.TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni said on Wednesday that the biggest blackout Thailand has seen in over 3 decades has not posed any negative impact on the travel industry just yet.Mr. Suraphon stated that several hotels have been equipped with their own back-up generators, therefore, the brownout that lasted a few hours on Tuesday night did not directly hit the tourism business.Mr. Suraphon’s affirmation was based on reports from TAT offices across the country.Meanwhile, Tourism Council of Thailand President Piyaman Tejapaibul added that a number of major hotels in the South have confirmed that they were not troubled by the brownout although many believe the situation could have psychological effect on travelers. The TAT Governor said that all agencies involved in energy should start planning long-term solutions while major tourist destinations should now consider back-up plans for the future.-- NNT 2013-05-23
jekkokc Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 'the brownout', lol was that when the xxxx was hitting the fan 1
chooka Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 TAT always come out with these comments whenever anything happens in Thailand. It didn't effect tourism because the tourists were already here when the power went off. What is a "Brownout" as opposed to a "Blackout" Is that like turning the switch 75% off so the lights are only dimmed? 1
MaxLee Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Is the TAT mafia just stupid, do they think the international people are a bunch if idiots, or are they just so full of themselves??? 1
Popular Post sirchai Posted May 23, 2013 Popular Post Posted May 23, 2013 Tourists nowadays travel with a generator, the TAT added.- 3
noitom Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Not a mention about the impact on hospitals and patients on life support or suffering as a result of this.
Popular Post Soupdragon Posted May 23, 2013 Popular Post Posted May 23, 2013 I am sure it just adds to the tourist experience and reinforces the idea they are traveling in a third world country. 3
DocN Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Things that also had no impact on Thai- tourism: - the hurricane in the USA - the last solar flare - the eruption of a volcano on Jupiter - the Champions League final - me, spilling soup yesterday .... 1
chooka Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Not a mention about the impact on hospitals and patients on life support or suffering as a result of this. Tourists bring money, lots of it and that is the main concern.
fakename Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 It doesnt matter if the Thai industry suffered or that the majority of tourist and Thai's suffered, at least SOME of the bigger hotels didnt suffer. We are all grateful to T A T for that. T A T lives in a world of its own, to hell with the people that are getting murdered in the south, or any other problems. Money is the important thing. They need to worry about the tourist dollars.
chooka Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Tourists.. The holy cow.. It's the droppings that are holy and not the cow. When the cow dries up it's off to McDonalds. 1
LuckyLew Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Most tourist down south were probably too drunk to realize there was a power outage or else the faces were too busy eating hairpie that the did not care
JetsetBkk Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Mr. Suraphon stated that ... the brownout that lasted a few hours on Tuesday night did not directly hit the tourism business. It wasn't a brown out, it was a black out. Mr. Suraphon doesn't know what he's talking about. But then he's TAT. Nothing new here.
Halion Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 They can not even stay on tract on this article. Standby generators run by hotels and other organisations have no impact on whether the power failure was a brown out or a black out. It was indeed a black out in most regions where the grid was down with no power available. A brown out is where there is partial supply to cetain sectors. This was a black out, a total power failure over an expansive region.
chainarong Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Not a mention about the impact on hospitals and patients on life support or suffering as a result of this. One would hope that the back up generators worked, these should be tested weekly.
A Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 TAT always come out with these comments whenever anything happens in Thailand. What is a "Brownout" as opposed to a "Blackout" Is that like turning the switch 75% off so the lights are only dimmed? Spot on, tourists already here and how many overseas cancelled their plans when they heard there was no power ? The TAT, like so many agencies, feesl obliged to be reassuring when something happens but always open their mouths without engaging what little brains they have.
Spoonman Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 lol @ brownout. Was on Samui when the power went off for a few moments, bout 30 minutes later reception came to my room to explain there was a severe blackout how ever the Hotel had a back-up generator that powers the lights and air-conditioning but not the water pumps and asked us to refrain from using the toilet. I mentioned that I needed to take a dump and that maybe I should go for a swim in the ocean instead if the toilet had no water...............she giggled. 1
bigbamboo Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Glad to hear the tourist sector was not effected in any way. Not sure about whether most tourists down south would be too concerned about blackouts or brownouts. By that time at night a goodly number would already be wiped out.

Actually it was a pain in the ass as the missus and I had just showered and were to head over to Chaweang Beach for dinner followed by a few drinks somewhere..............instead I had to spend the night with her...... nice that the hotel bar was within ear shot of my pool villa so ordering more beers was easy.
DocN Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Listening to TAT is almost comical...yet ver sad. Nothing can harm tourism, when it comes to their (TAT's) expertease. No airport -blocking, no Tsunami, no flood, no act of terrot....you can count on them to be out with "no harm done" and "here are the record numbers for next year" as sure as the sun will rise in the east! 2
Halion Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 So bloody typical of these morons who are more concerned with the perception of tourists than they are with the welfare of their own people. 2
ginjag Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 So bloody typical of these morons who are more concerned with the perception of tourists than they are with the welfare of their own people. Cannot see the scams in the dark.--no road blocks---Please get a new body of fresh thinking people in place of these ( I'm alright, no body can touch me) execs at TAT
Thereisnoif Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Is the TAT mafia just stupid, do they think the international people are a bunch if idiots, or are they just so full of themselves??? They are more than likely very stupid, but don't care because no matter how stupid their statements are, no one will ever be held accountable for them.
Thai at Heart Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 No impact. Does this mean the place functions perfectly well without power. Great!
khaowong1 Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 TAT: The nuclear power plant that exploded today in Krabi, that killed approx. 18 million people, poses no impact on Thai tourism.. 2
Pib Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 TAT announces the TAT: The nuclear power plant that exploded today in Krabi, that killed approx. 18 million people, poses no impact on Thai tourism.. TAT announces the explosion has solved the insurgency problem which should be a big boost to tourism in the south after the 25,000 year radioactive contamination half-life issue is resolved....TAT requests the govt develop a plan to reduce the 25,000 year period to 30 days. 2

You guys are great, joking, but T.A.T. just don't get it. Nothing will ever stop the huge advance in tourist arrivals here. Nothing! They take themselves too seriously.
baboon Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Gentlemen - the power was off for an hour or so which is the norm in Thailand every few weeks. It will not affect tourism in the slightest, but must be a boon for media with nothing really of interest to report..
