Plugs Uk

Featured Replies

We are planning a visit to the UK and are wondering if the Thai 2 pin plugs will fit in the UK 3 pin sockets?

If not where could we get an adaptor?

Nope, the Thai plug won't fit a UK outlet. The good news is that HomePro and even Tesco have adaptors that will allow you to use your Thai plugged kit when in the UK.

They look like this:

Note that these adaptors are not fused and so are technically not permitted in the UK (would not be allowed to be sold), they also do not have shutters on the outlet so watch out if you have small fingers around.

Just take care as you would with any adaptor and all will be fine.

EDIT If you're just using low power (<1A / 200W) kit then every high-street electrical store in the UK will have 'shaver adapters' which will accept both types of Thai plug.

Thanks for that Crossy.

No visa for the lady yet but trying to cover all bases.

Be very wary with any of the locally bought adapters they are of inferior material and get very hot even with slight loading. You can buy good EU certified ones once in the UK. Safety First.

I have been using the locally purchased adaptors as pictured by Crossy for many years now, no problems nor any noticeable heating. Now those very popular (here in TH) extension cords with multiple switchable outlets, that's a different story. Multiple failures, incorrect wiring, faulty switches ... really trashy and dangerous.

The pound shop solution is one that friends of mine have used, although many pound shops only sell the other-way-around adaptor for Brits going abroad. What I did for visitors was obtain a good-quality Thai three-way line socket (i.e. the kind you can attach to a flexible cable), stick a bit of flex on it and then buy a plug in the UK to add on. That way you have an inexpensive connector that will accept two or three gadgets and is fused and pretty safe. I don't mean one of the cheap multi-output adaptors from Big C that melt. If you are using two pin round Thai plugs you also have the option of buying a 3 pin plug adaptor that can be fitted over the original, so that it looks pretty much the same as the normal UK plug (good for laptops).

You have already been given the best advice possible from crossy, but having lived here many years, I tend to take a 4 socket outlet (thai style) extension lead and use the universal adapter for the mains outlet.

if you have an address in the UK , they can be ordered from amazon
