Thailand moves up 3 ranks in World Competitiveness Survey

BANGKOK, 30 May 2013 (NNT) – Thailand has moved up 3 ranks in the World Competitiveness Survey, standing at number 27; whereas it ranked 30th. last year.

The World Competitiveness Survey, conducted in 60 countries by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), a Switzerland-based business school, shows that Thailand has improved in terms of economic expansion, GDP growth, currency stability, political conflicts, and tourism revenue. However, the survey also shows the country’s weaknesses, which include long-term unemployment, lack of scientific research, and corruption.

Last year, the IMD ranked Thailand at the 30th position out of 59 countries surveyed, indicating that Thailand needed to improve in 3 aspects: government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure.

Rural doctors call off demonstration: govt spokesman
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Rural doctors decided on Thursday to cancel their demonstration in front of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's house, which had originally been scheduled for June 6, government spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi said.

They would instead meet for a "workshop" with working teams of Public Health Minister Pradit Sinthawanarong and PM's Office Minister Nivatthamrong Boonsongpaisal, and possibly PM's secretary general Suranand Vejjajiva on that day in a bid to find a solution to their problems, according to the spokesman.

He quoted Suranand as saying that the meeting would listen to views from all sides involved, with the public benefit taken into account.

The Rural Doctor Society is campaigning against the public health minister's payforperformance (P4P) scheme and is calling for his ouster.

Dr Arak Wongworachat, a leader of the rural doctors, said yesterday that his group agreed to postpone the June 6 protest for two weeks.

He said the rural doctors would gather in front of the prime minister's house if their meeting with relevant officials on June 6 does not lead to any satisfactory result.
