Report: Top Pakistani Taliban Leader Killed In U.s. Drone Strike

Drones are effective, but will only disrupt the enemy. As already quoted by a very senior counter terrorism expert in the UK the conflict will go on for generations based upon the current scenarios. So in the meantime, best endeavours in the West and elsewhere to minimise the effectiveness of radical Islam terrorist attacks.

As someone mentioned their does not appear to be a COIN strategy to reverse the current situation, so the fight will go on for years and years.

What is US/NATO doing to address the elements within the Pakistani intelligence and military that are supporting radical Islamic organisations? Right now, at least in the public domain, seems to be just about zero. They are repeating the same mistakes as after the 9/11 invasion of Afghanistan, when Pakistan reequipped the Taliban, mainly funded by Saudi money. It appears more likely than not, that the Taliban will control most of the rural areas, maybe including cities in the various provinces. What seems to be overlooked is the Taliban are nearly all Pashtun; the Pashtun in the Afgan security forces are very reluctant to engage the Taliban. So the makeup of the security forces in mainly comprised of ethic minorities. I am by no means an expert but this looks like a receipe for disaster.

Most analysts disagree that the conflict in Thailand’s deep South has to date been driven by Islamic ideology. As the conflict drags on it is likely that Islamic extremism will take hold; already there are reports in the media and from analysts that this is happening with the younger armed militants.

So just what kind of people is it that are carrying out terrorist attacks in S. Thailand? You call it a conflict. There have been many conflicts around the world that didn't include terrorism and the killing of innocents like children and school teachers.

How would you describe these people involved in "conflict" who carry out acts of terrorism? Your PC inability to call them terrorists is stunning.

Take off your blinders. I'm not that easily fooled.

The acts of terrorism is confined to a specific area, so I call it a conflict. The Thai Malays are identified as separtists, terrorists or militants. But if you wish, terrorists is fine. To balance matters, the Thai military and Thai security forces in the conflict are known for disappearences, extrajudicial killing, torture and human trafficking for which their have been no convictions.

Drug trafficking adds fuel to the fire, so based upon the constant reports in Thailand, I would guess that Thai security forces are also involved.

I think we can return to the topic of the thread. The South of Thailand is interesting and provides some correlations, but is off-topic. At this point in time, the Thai gov't doesn't call them terrorists and opts for terms like militants and insurgents, but that's a topic for a different thread.

Trouble is it's like pulling sharks teeth. There is always another ready to take it's place.

When you are trying to eradicate a disease it's not easy, many suffer before a total cure is found.

A lot of truth and wisdom there. Perhaps diseases of the mind are the most dangerous and impossible to eradicate safely or without collateral damage. Sad, but realistic fact of life for centuries.

Ideology is a brain disease. It's clearly self-evident.

One way of avoiding some of the deaths of the terrorists friends and family members is if the terrorists stop hiding out with these people in an attempt to avoid justice being served. I have to wonder about the "purity" of such people if this is the man arranged for the young girl to be shot in the head.

An orange explaining to the apple why hes better. Your not these people, so spare us your typical tyranny..

Where are they supposed to hide?

If you sheltered a prison escapee in the UK and the police arrive at your door and beat you over the head with truncheon, then that's down to you.

We can't live everyone's life for them.

If they were not murdering innocent civilians, they would not be getting droned. Using their friends and family as human shields is just one more symptom of evil.
