Google Maps Get Direction Streets Names In Thai Language Only Now?

Featured Replies

Previously, Google Maps Get Direction when language setting in English, streets name display in English as well. However, now all streets name in Thai language now. Does anyone know the workaround?

Thank you

When in Google-maps, click on the "options-icon" (the wheel) in the top right corner of the screen.

There you can choose between "Thai" and "English"

In the English mode, street names will be shown in Thai and English.

Initially the Thai street names will be visible, but the more you zoom in, English street names will appear.

It's good that the English is there. Having it only in Thai would be absurd as I don't think Thais really understand how to use (or even the general concept of) maps.

I think the OPs issue/question specifically refers to "Directions" (auto, bus, walking), rather than displaying maps. By that we mean the list of directions, which used to show the street names in English, and maybe Thai, but now just show them in Thai, even though the directions like "turn right" are in English.

It does seem like this is something new, both on a desktop PC and on an Android phone - even in Navigation. I haven't found a work-around yet.

I can't even figure out how to change my Chrome Mobile default search engine, on my Android phone, from www.google.co.th , so now just use Dolphin.

I made a report with Google Maps on this issue of turn by turn directions language issue and asked to revert back to old setting where
street names will be shown according to language setting and wait for the response.

Would encourage more people to make such report. Yahoo Maps still display turn by turn directions in English
as per old Google Maps settings. However, Yahoo Maps tends to lack in details and search results is subpar.

Done. Reported to Google with this comment:

In the Directions List the street names in Thailand should be given in English, ie romanised names, when English is selected in the language setting.

I guess I am not the only one having this problem.

How does one report it to Google?

On the computer, click on "Report a problem" at the bottom right of the screen.

On my Nexus 4, with Directions on the screen, I tap on the icon at the bottom right of the screen (three vertically aligned dots) and a context-sensitive menu pops up:

Let's report this problem in great numbers, so that Google with move it higher on their list of priorities. Since both Thai and romanised names are still on the map, these data are still in the database and thus it should be easy to fix it.

^ Which version of Maps are you currently running on your GNEX 4? 6.14.3? Where did you buy your GNEX 4? Here? In the U.S.?

I am running 6.14.1 (ownhere) on my GNEX 4, as this is the latest available modded version which supports worldwide Navigation (turn-by-turn, with spoken assist), and I have this same issue.

The obvious Android work-around would be to downrev, maybe into the 5.9 series to potentially recover this lost capability. You won't lose anything significant, but I'm not at which exact release this capability might return. Enterprising individuals might find it more rewarding to have a go at Google in Thailand? Or review some Thai IT/social forums where there might be some guidance, or where local Google employees are participating?

To make report, when in Google Maps, there is a link in lower left "Report a problem", and make report under "Direction and Transit". It requires you to have direction results. So just go "get direction" first and input any two points, A & B, after get direction list then proceed with the report method above.

More reports are needed to move up the priority list.

Quick update on the reply I get back from Google, here is the reply below.

"Thank you for reporting this problem. Unfortunately, for various
reasons, the problem you reported isn't easy for us to fix at this time:

We did want to let you know that we've escalated your report to the
appropriate engineering team. Even though we don't have an immediate fix
to your problem, please be assured that we're working hard for a
resolution.

Thanks for helping us to improve Google Maps!"

I was wrong, then, when I thought it should be easy to fix. In my naivety I thought they had all these names in a database, with the Thai names for example in a column with the title th_names and the romanised names in a column with the title en_names and when they updated the application they referenced the wrong column by mistake. The Google software engineer with whom I had dinner the other day thought it would be an easy fix.

FWIW, I side-loaded an older version of Android Google Maps (5.4) but the directions still give street names in Thai. Previously on this version they did not, so whatever changes were made are in the server and not related to the client.

In the top right hand corner see Satellite and under that Traffic with a drop down menu, English is there

Are you suggesting that checking "English" changes the directions, specifically road and street names which is the subject of this thread, to include English? It does not on my PC, or Android phone.
