Democrats to impeach govt over water project
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The opposition Democrat Party will file a petition to remove the Cabinet on suspicion that the government colluded with four large companies in the bidding for the Bt350-billion water-management scheme.

Democrat Bangkok MP Atthavit Suwannapakdee, also a shadow Cabinet spokesman, said his Cabinet had decided to solicit 120 MP signatures to file impeachment proceedings against the government's Cabinet.

The opposition is accusing the government of violating the National Anti-Corruption Commission law and the Constitution's Article 67 for not allowing members of the public to take part in the bidding, and for colluding with four large conglomerates in the bidding process.

The impeachment move is linked with the opposition's plan to censure the government in the upcoming House session.

impending verdict

Meanwhile, the Central Administrative Court will issue a ruling on June 27 about whether the government can go ahead with the flood-prevention modules.

This verdict will come in response to a petition filed by Stop Global Warming Association's chairman Srisuwan Janya and 44 others.

The petition accuses Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, the Strategic Committee for Water-Resources Management, the National Water-Management and Flood-Prevention Policy Commission and the Water- and Flood-Management Commission (WFMC) of abusing their authority in preparing projects related to the flood-prevention/water-management systems. They say the process was hastily pushed through without conducting environmental and health impact assessments or allowing for public participation.

A new news item reports that a recent poll of economists showed over 60% considered corruption is the country's most serious problem and has serious economic implications. Unfortunately this is nothing new and unlikely to worry the government as so many of their own people will be involved. Yingluck's threats to deal with corrupt officials in the rice scheme is even more hollow than usual.

Speaking of corruption will the PTP drive to white wash Thaksin. If successful will it not bring a sizable chunk of money to Yingluck.

I really can't agree with the charges as it is just lowering themselves down to the slums with the PTP style of discussing national policy. Ignore it and bring charges against those who disagree.

But that seems to be the accepted way of Governing here in Thailand for the PTP

Take over the courts and then let them make decisions, what ever you do, do not try to work with the opposition to improve it.

Just my opinion

There was massive corruption prior to Thaksin Shinawatr's overthrow.

It looks like all the Thaksin mates have their snouts ready to dip into the trough.

Ready? They're already doing it.

Impeachment may be a way for the PTP led government to get out of the pickle they are in with some public sympathy.
