I'm looking to move to Thailand on the 6th August and I'm looking at going on a mutiple tourist visa and changing it to a non Imm B after a few months to obtain work as an English teacher and footy coach, is this possible to change and where.

cheers andy

You can apply for a work permit while in Thailand on a tourist visa. To pick up the work permit, once it is ready, you need the non-B visa, for which you go to a Thai consulate in a neighbouring country.

so if im correct I get my tourist visa, once accepted for a position of work I apply for a work permit then travel to Laos or some where to have my visa changed ?

Yes, obtain the "B" Visa at a neighboring country with documents provided by the employer. A Tourist Visa will give you a 60 day stay, with an option for a 30 day extension for 1900 baht.

thank you beach guy, do you know if the non Imm B has to be stamped at immigration ?

This has made my trip and life slightly easier ; )

Not sure I follow, the tourist visa entry is cancelled when you depart Thailand, any existing visa would be cancelled when they issue the "B" visa, your passport would be stamped with a 90 day entry upon entering in to Thailand again. Change of visa status within the country may be possible, but I don't think the norm.

Arriving in Thailand with the single-entry non-B visa you will get permission to stay for 90 days. Any time during the last 30 days you go to the local immigration office and submit your application for a one-year extension of stay for the reason of employment with form TM.7 and the necessary paperwork from your employer, who will probably know what is needed. Depending on whether your employer is a government school or a private school, paragraph 2.6 or 2.7 of the following rules (English translations) apply:

Thai Police Order 777/2551

Immigration Bureau Order 305/2551

my problem is the change in visa requirements at the minute and not having a placement of work I cannot apply for a non imm B under new rules, I do not want to apply for wok until I'm in Thailand, just to be safe.

As long as a tourist visa can be changed to a non Imm B I'm happy

I am not sure if your understand "change of visa" in the same way that it is used in Thailand, where it means a change of visa status issued by an immigration office, ie in Thailand, to a foreigner who entered Thailand with a tourist visa or visa-exempt and can apply for a change of visa to non-O at his local immigration office if he qualifies for one of several types of one-year extensions, eg marriage extension or retirement extension.

In your case, you do not qualify for a one-year employment extension until you have the work permit and therefore you cannot apply for a visa change at the immigration office but instead you will have to go a Thai consulate, ie outside Thailand, to apply for a new visa, which is not a visa change but an application for a new visa of a different type from what you had previously.
