BANGKOK, July 3 - Key Red Shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan on Wednesday turned down the chairmanship of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), citing health problems.

Mr Jatuporn's backing away from the post followed reports that he will succeed current UDD chair Thida Thavornsreth who earlier said she wanted to quit.

The key Red Shirt leader explained that he needed at least three months of medical treatment for a herniated disk.

Mr Jatuporn, who missed being offered a ministerial post in every cabinet reshuffle, said he was not saddened that his name was not in the latest lineup. He also denied that he received money in exchange for not taking the ministerial post.

The UDD leader said the red shirt movement will continue support the Pheu Thai-led coalition government on the condition that there should be no corruption and power abuse.

As the Parliament is likely to postpone deliberation of the amnesty bills and replace them with the 2014 budget bill in the upcoming session August 1, Mr Jatuporn said he disagreed with the decision as the amnesty bill is considered more important than the latter.

He said the government should not be concerned about money rather than the people's lives, particularly those who are still detained for protest-related charges.

UDD chair Thida said the Red Shirt movement has organised a seminar among the the group's leading members and concluded that both the UDD and the government still have potential to fight against their opponents--in particular the anti-government white-mask movement which seems to be losing its momentum. He wants to be a minister but he sucks so they offer him the Red Shirt chair as a consolation. Of course he doesn't accept it. He's sort of doing a Chalerm but slightly more maturely.

The reason he didn't except it is in his talk

"The UDD leader said the red shirt movement will continue support the Pheu Thai-led coalition government on the condition that there should be no corruption and power abuse."

no corruption and power abuse.

Kind of shuts the door on him.

Is it possable that the wheels are falling off the PTP and they can't find any real leadership for the red shirts.

Seems like the UDD chairmanship is becoming a political hot potato. Perhaps they should try to democratically elect a chairperson, then they may get someone who wants and respects the position.

A slightly different message in a newspaper article today in which he is quoted as saying the government can no longer rely on red shirt support as the reds have been let down by the government which has not recognised what's been done for them and are only interested in PTP.

He's right that PTP are users but so was he with his arson calls etc. in Bangkok and I'm sure part of his message concerns his absence from the cabinet.

Maybe he does need medical treatment but I'm quite sure he's up to something.

I could be wrong and am happy to be corrected but when the pending cabinet re-shuffle was in the news, and being denied by Yingluck, he didn't say anything about a medical condition stopping him taking a cabinet post if offered.

He doesn't need to be chairperson of the reds as he has power in the movement and Yes, he's up to something. Not being given a ministerial post has stung.

After reading what he is reported to have said there seems little doubt that it is a mental condition he is being treated for.

Delusions of grandeur are only a part of it, a hero in his own eyes indeed.

Possibly the worst part of his rant was :

"I want the government to show them sympathy, because if it happens to be toppled again they can again rise to fight for it"

So what he is saying is that if PT should lose an election the red leaders will again urge their followers to take to the streets.

Unlikely to ever happen. With a democratically elected leader the UDD might actually start pushing for real nationwide democracy. Currently the UDD and PT prefer the one man (& you know who that one man is) one vote style of leadership.

Quite frankly, I would like to see the UDD become a grassroots run organization. With some bottom-up feedback it could become a real force for change in Thailand.

Wow, the red shirt supporters on TV have been SOOOO quiet for the past few months . . . what's going on?

A cynic might suggest that the latest cheques bounced, or a change in marketing-strategy, dictated from overseas ? But that can't possibly be true ! wink.png

At least one can see who's red-leaning views were genuine, to their credit they're still here, despite the rice-scam & constant-reshuffles.

Of course, many posters do sympathise with the aims of the grass-roots reds, to give real help to the poor, it's more their current-leadership who they doubt.

Apropos of which, why would a true Red-leader like Jattupon really turn down the honour of this leadership-role, a chance to show what a good/loyal leader he might be, if promoted ?

Both Pol. Capt. Chalerm and Mr. Jatuporn have finally come to the realization that they are no longer needed nor necessary to the Party. Both are not happy campers.

Tools in a nutshell.

And talking of nuts, the red shirts seem to be on the verge of gelding themselves if they can't find a leader.

Strangely enough that would strengthen Thaksin's position.

It's a good thing to get both of these criminals pushed aside.
