ESDinBKK Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 My grandson is getting near the age that he should have a train. Is there anyplace in town that sell quality trains like Lionel or American Flyer?
saakura Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 There was a hobby shop on the 3rd or 4th floor of Silom Complex on the Silom Road which exclusively sold only high quality model trains. The entire complex was shut down 6 months for renovation and recently reopened. I am not sure if the shop survived the renovation, but they had been in business for very many years

I am not sure if the shop survived the renovation, but they had been in business for very many years I think this is the same shop now relocated across the road under the Sala Daeng station. Can't remember the name of the building, but the shop is on an upper floor.I entered the shop once to try and buy a small pot of enamel paint. Prices seemed extremely high, and the business looked Japanese.
RupertIII Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 There is a model train shop in the basement (lower ground?) floor of Fortune Town on Ratchada. Fun watching them going around their circuits while I was waiting for the laptop to be repaired. Looked good stuff.
pillenwerfer Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Don't know the age of your grandson, but think I know a lot about toy trains. The place in Thanya Plaza has expensive models that just circle around, little or no interaction by the "user" seems possible. Children from 2 years od up, generally favour stuff they can play with, build tracks, create train with carriages and load wagons There are wooden systems that are excellent, and trains/carriages with snap or magnetic couplings. (watch them realise about magnetic attraction/repulsion). (bigjigsrail wooden for example) and Tomy japanese stuff with plastic tracks and battery driven engines. I have bought loads of stuff over the past two years and the child plays endlessly and imaginatively with it. Leader of the pack for many is the "Thomas the Train" series. Go tp youtube for dozens of examples of children enjoying various systems More to your point, go to Toys r Us at Central World, The toy section at Isetan, and The Toy Section at Central Chidlom.

I have never been to their shop, but have placed telephone orders with them many times in the past when I lived in the Sattahip area. They have all kinds of stuff (Atlas, Bachmann, Athearn, etc - no Lionel stuff though). It's called http://www.trainsforthais.com/index.asp. They even have small starter train sets which are not too expensively priced. I also have a bunch of old stuff (mainly Atlas) that I don't use anymore in case you're interested, but it is mostly track and switches and some older generation locomotives and rolling stock. I think that they only allow people to visit their shop on weekends. You can double check this on their website.
