Mumbai is one of the most expensive places to live unless you like slums. But this troll thread will be funny when others wake up. Why scrape by in another country. If you are going to live dirt cheap and you get in an accident or catch a bad illness then what? A country you do not belong to will not take care of you.

While i wouldn't usually encourage people to make a complete transition cold turkey (similar to making a big purchase like buying a house; check it out first), there are a couple of reasons i've seen:

- lack of awareness the option exist affordably. Only the mega rich can afford to travel. There weren't as many travel blogs that exist today.

- cultural influence / egocentrism. You are convinced that you already have it better than others. You should be lucky/happy to live in [home country]. Everywhere else is a sh**hole or beneath you.

- addiction to suffering/struggling. This might sound silly, but after a while you find it difficult to conceive a simplier life. You were convinced to get-get-get all the material possessions first, then you can relax 'one day'

- entitlement mentality. The gov'ts [insert social program here] is supposed to do this for me for free. Taking some personal responsibility is frightening to this type of mindset.

- taking risks. Our fear of the future can have a death grip on us if left unchecked. Breaking out initially takes a lot of courage; but definitely worth it in terms of cost savings and scalability.

I've come to find out that like fruit that grows well in some environments and refuse to sprout in others, its similar with people and cultures. The worst that can happen is that you dont like what is on offer. Oh well....more for me

According to this BBC documentary, made in 2010, you can get an apartment that sleeps 4 in Mumbai or Calcutta for $24 a month.

Maybe a lot of people can move out here if they so wished but it may be the case that they are more comfortable with what they know and understand. The cost of living does not play a part in it for them.

Plenty have families, grandchildren, a nice home and friends.

Some are not adventurous. Many different reasons.

I have friends who moved out to Bulgaria and to Turkey. They love it there and it was cheap when they moved there. They would not even consider Thailand because we are all different with different needs and expectations.

For many it is not about women and sex. Many are happy as they are and comfortable with what they understand.

I have to admit from a personal point of view though that there are very few women back home in my age bracket that I would want to be with.

Advice that many farangs might do well to consider: Make it there, spend it here.

The reality is that very few farangs move to Thailand and figure out a way to make a substantial income....SOME DO...but most don't.

The reality is that for most it is easier to make significant money in your home country than in Thailand.....as to whether you can invest / save enough money to ultimately retire to Thailand with sufficient funds is generally up to you and your circumstances and/or will power and determination to set and reach a goal.

Instead of having a nice sexy girlfriend, don't you think you have many things to consider first ? Find a job in Thailand, understand thai and their culture, like the food (yeah pad thai and tom yam khung are delicious when you are here for 3 weeks)...I just don't get it. Moving to another country is not easy and even if you are having a shitty life in your home country it doesn't mean your life will be better here

I think the OP is totally naive about moving abroad and all that is involved. This is the problem, many believe the streets are paved with gold and just get on a plane, arrive and you’re in, just like that.

Firstly, if you are under 50 years old, have a small or no pension to look forward to, inadequate savings and no job arranged prior to landing here, than it`s going to be a rough ride and doubt whether that person would last long here. It is not easy, sometimes impossible to find legitimate employment or to start a business in Thailand.

Next, Thailand is not as cheap as many believe, you need dosh here and lots of it, and unless the person has a secure substantial pension to look forward to or some other very long term guaranteed substantial foreign income, that will increase later on to balance the costs of inflation & fluctuating bank foreign exchange and interest rates, plus a considerable nest egg that may be required for medical care as we get older, than it`s going to be a grim future ahead.

As for the women, gone are the days of the sweet little, loyal, subservient Thai princesses, these days the Thai girls on par with their Western counterparts. If you like women, than you need money and the price goes up the older we get.

Then there are the cultural, language, food, religious and different attitudes of the Thai people to consider. Many Westerners are unable to adapt and living in Thailand, may become one big hell of a culture shock for them.

Also what many wanting to live in Thailand hopefuls don`t realise is that when we move here, we give up most our statutory rights, which we take for granted and enjoy in our home countries. On one stroke of the pen, we can be gone within 7 days.

And this I think answers the question; why people don't come to Thailand instead to struggle in their home country?
