Chalerm wants Thailand off watch list for human trafficking

BANGKOK, 9 July 2013 (NNT) – Police Captain Chalerm Yubamrung, the Labor Minister, says his priority is to get Thailand of the US’s watch list for human trafficking.

Newly-appointed Labor Minister Police Captain Chalerm has said he will go all out to have Thailand removed from the human trafficking country list. According to him, crackdowns will be launched with the help of police. To facilitate the police in their efforts as well as to ease their workload, he has ordered the Labor Permanent-Secretary to submit all related documents to the authorities.

He said there are still several areas where human rights abuses are rife, especially in Samut Sakhon. To tackle the issue, the minister has instructed the Samut Sakhon police to step up measures and get the problem fixed within 7 days.

Last month, the US put Thailand on its watch list for human trafficking, placing it on the Tier 2 Watch list for its lack of compliance with human trafficking laws. It is the fourth consecutive year that Thailand has been placed on this list.

Meanwhile, Director-General of the Department of American and South Pacific Affairs Sek Wannamethee says the US is still concerned over Thailand’s measures in dealing with the human trafficking problems and the slow process in bringing those traffickers to justice; considering the number of those arrested and found guilty of such a crime is very small compared to the number of cases pending in court.

Wanna be out the list ? easy .... stop human trafficking ... but when you see those cheap labor from Burma, Laos or Cambodia working for peanuts in some Thai factory I guess the out of list is not for tomorrow.

Wow that's even faster than it took for him to rid Thailand of all the tourist scams ! Is there no problem too great for this saviour of the tourists, protector of the downtrodden, scourge of the drug lords, defender against ice cream wielding mutant newbies. Oh Phi Chalerm in thee we trust.

The problem now is that whenever Chalerm says anything we all roll our eyes and out comes the 90 day line. That's what he gets for being so stupid however!!

This is a regional problem, everybody is to blame, just about every country will have to put it's hands up to some culpability. The borders are too porous, and too long to be policed correctly. The only way this problem will be solved is by every country in the region cracking down in unison, with exceptionally long jail sentences for the people involved, while taking up the Scottish mantra announced recently for dealing with victims of trafficking........

The most important part, not treating the victims like criminals...........

Prosecutions for everyone in the chain need to be easier, and in this area cross border arrest warrants should be quickly enforced. This is the type of issue that ASEAN should have at the top of it's agenda.

As far as the sex trade goes, someone being found in a brothel with victims of human trafficking should be prosecuted too. In this area it would be easy enough for a Thai national to suss out that the staff aren't Thai, and they will learn to stay away. That in itself would kill the demand for cross border sex trafficking, it would need some sharper ideas to deal with Thai on Thai trafficking within the country.

It's a long road, but it's not Thailand's road to travel alone, this is a regional problem that requires a regional solution.

When he told the police to fix the problem within 7 days, did he wave his magic wan while giving the order. Because unless he does have a magic wan, it won't get fixed in 7 days but it may make the police laugh for 7 days.

But hopefully some good will come from his attention towards this terrible problem, although it will probably be a short attention span.

Actually, he may just have found his calling in life. If ever there was a wounded lion who can make a name for himself over something this is it.

He commands the coppers pretty much. he obviously isn't the sort to sit behind a desk, and would love nothing more than to have his smiling mug on the front page for actually achieving something. Many of the problems lie with long established companies on the other side of the political line in agri-business.

If Thailand wants to get off the list, they actually have to come up with something concrete. He might just get something done, you never know.

Unfortunately Ranong is one of the main entry points. You can't leave the province without going through an army checkpoint. 5 in all I think. However the city has it's own sex trade, 95% of who are youg Burmese. IMO young enough to get you in trouble back home.. The army send trucks to take them back to barracks, and bring them back next morning. Among the other regulars are the police.

Or as Labor Ministor he could push the Thai companies who hire non Thai labor to pay them the legal salaries, with benifets, they have worked for.

This time, on this particular issue, they have to try to achieve something, or Thailand will face problems with exports.

And that definitely will get the attention of some pretty big agribusiness people.

4 years on the list, too little too late i say, all those people that have and are still suffering because of greed, how do you give these people back whats been taken away from them, and what, now the government is reacting because of pressure from the US and how much financial damage thailand will suffer because of sanctions, and not because of civil liberties, I am surprised thailand has been allowed to get away with this as long as they have

The whole business of say fisheries is set up on the basis that it has to be done as cheaply as possible. To insure that all the labour on the boats and processing are paid correctly the legal minimum will inevitably push prices up and Thailand will lose business because of it, no doubt.

Since when did companies give a d**m about paying properly when they weren't forced to? Thailand has flown too close to the sun for too long.

Guess things will get even better once this politically motivated criminal conviction, and all the other criminal charges (which could be politically motivated) are quashed and the supreme leader returns.

Next year, according to some reports Thailand could be listed as No.1 Human Rights Abuser; which doesn't surprise me in the least. Thais have no compassion for anyone who isn't Thai and the wealthy elite have not compassion for anyone, including their own citizens.
