My partner is from Lao and we both live on Thailand

At present he gets a 30 day visa and does a visa run to Cambodia every month to renew. I will be grateful for any advice on how to get a longer term visa - preferably at least a year Thanks

I'm pretty sure the same visa options that are available to everyone else would be available to your partner by applying for a Thai visa at a Thai consulate in Laos either in Vientiane or Savannakhet. It really depends if your partner is working here or not because if he/she is not, then the options would be limited to getting a tourist visa/non-imm O I think or perhaps a study visa (although it would be funny if a Lao national came to Thailand for language study given the similarities between the two languages even if the scripts are slightly different).

If traveling out of the country every month is not a problem for your partner though, your partner could just continue doing visa runs for the time being provided Thai immigration doesn't start question him/her. I know that Lao nationals get 30 day stamps even if traveling overland into Thailand as well as 30 day visa-free entry into Cambodia so continuing to do so shouldn't be a problem.

You have indicated nothing to indicate he would qualify for a non immigrant visa of any type. Suspect only a tourist visa would be available.

Why doesn't he get a two month tourist visa(฿?) and extend that for one month (฿1900) at any Thai immigration office "Then" leave the country.

GF been doing that for an eternity.

You can get an ED Visa for many things other than studying Thai.

Since Lao nationals get special work permit and extension of stay privileges you might be able to hire your partner as a housekeeper or some other type of household help.

The biggest thing that helps is that they can get the work permit without working for a registered company and the minimum salary requirement is waived for the extension.
