PM wants Thais living overseas to promote Thainess to the world

BANGKOK, 10 July 2013 (NNT) – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has told Thai students studying overseas to help promote and propagate “Thainess” to the world, while expressing her concerns over the well-being of Thais living abroad.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra met with Thai exchange students from USA and Australia yesterday. During the meeting, Miss Yingluck told the students to be proud of Thai culture, tradition, and the country; she asked them to let others know of all these good things while studying abroad.

She also said she was happy to know that wherever they lived, Thais would always love and help one another out in all circumstances.

She also expressed her concerns over the well-being of Thais living overseas, adding that she has instructed the Interior and Foreign Ministries to look after them and assist them when necessary.

Furthermore, Miss Yingluck assured Thais who live abroad that they would be able to renew their identification cards at all Thai embassies or consulates around the world next year.

so a global promotion campaign on Thainess? it just opens up too many cans of worms to dare to comment on what that could entail... I am sure they mean the "glossy" TAT image that they like everyone to think is Thailand which we all know is the REAL Thailand...

I see the warm and fuzzy "positive" news spinners are hard at it.

What on earth is she prattling on about. Students should go overseas and promote and practice Thainess? Shouldn't they be going overseas to open their minds and get a great experience? Are they worried what may happen to the poor little'un's brains with all this westernisation?

This is obviously not at all hypocritical since her own child attends a well regarded English bastion of education in Bangkok?

My country never asked me to promote them in Thailand .... what a silly thing to ask as I guess people or student abroad have other things to think about. maybe I am wrong .....

Thais are very good at looking out for one another abroad, much more so than many other nationalities. I have seen this at many universities.

What I have not seen is Thais making any kind of positive contribution to disadvantaged people in the country they reside in. Personally I think it would be nice if Thais saw themselves as people of the world more often and not unique and different because they are Thai. Give something back to people of the world, not just Thai people.

I think more practical advice would be more useful. Such as what to say when people ask why there are so many prostitutes in Thailand. And how is it that the Thai PM is the sister of a "self exiled" fugitive who is actually running the country. That sort of thing.

It seems they keep a filing cabinet full of these fluff pieces to drag out whenever the topics of the day become "awkward".

They tried imposing their 'Thainess' in Southern Thailand, looked what happened there.....................

How do they think up new ones? All the crackdowns have been done, now it is a push on Thainess, which has to be the most vague concept, and is apparently beyond the understanding of foreigners anyway. Maybe she means they should protest about things like buddha images being misused or something. Ah, protest, that is a touchy subject..........

Maybe she means start each lecture with a wai, and "Goood, mooooorning teeeeechur"

I thought Thainess was for the Thais ...

She seems to fail to realize there are many reasons they are over seas in the first place

One being the education system her is rather poor - same reason she went to USA to study

Fix the problems are home before you ask people to promote what is broken

One doesn't need the Prime Minister to tell the people over sea's to promote Thailand, what the PM needs is a good democratic Thailand ,where everyone is equal, the law has no fear nor favour, the constitution is structured for the people, the parliament is the peoples house and those who work in that house work for the people, and a rating of 9/10 for honesty and integrity from all its population, then the world would know all about Thailand

The fact is: she's an airhead and that will never improve.

Also, Thainess is a good thing? They should be hiding that crap.

So in effect "start up a jet ski hire business at your Uni and charge everyone that uses them $700 for the same scratches that you etch on to the underside with a screw driver. Then open up a grilled fish ball stall in the Uni campus, A local taxi business charging three times more than local taxi's and for the ambitious ladies a 'sports' massage business should see you able to finance your way through to Masters Degree."

Okay, before I go on a sarcastic rant: what -in the name of <deleted>- is "Thainess?

Fake smiles? The inability to tell the straight- out truth, accept criticism or advice (from farang, especially) and say "sorry" if you made a mistake?

Or is it that fake ideal of respecting elders (at all costs! And I mean ALL costs!), love children (but do everything to get them killed, from disastrous food to the no- helmet policy on motorbikes?) and generally see Thailand as the center of the known universe?

The cute folklore-stuff, like praying to a river- godess, instead of putting together a team of experts to longlastingly fight flooding?

The constant denial about prostitution, no matter if it is in your face on Patpong or hidden in a brothel upcountry?

I could go on and on and on and on and....

Yeah, just what Thailand needs, more promotion ........ Why not try to LEARN from the world instead you arrogant country...
