webfact
Swede called the embassy before committing suicide in PattayaBY WACHIRAPORNPATTAYA: -- On 11 July 2013, a Swedish man called the embassy to inform of his suicide plan. Police rushed to his apartment and found a naked body with head covered in a black plastic bag.Pattaya police received a call yesterday at 5pm from the Swedish embassy in Bangkok that a Swede in Pattaya had called the embassy to inform that he would commit a suicide in his apartment at Soi 15 Pattaya-Naklua road, Moo 5, Banglamung, Chonburi. Police rushed to the scene together with Sawangbaribun thamsathan rescue team in Pattaya. At the scene of the incident, which was room number 2/8 on the second floor of the two storey building, a naked body of Mr.David Cavallin, 43, was found on the mattress with his head covered in a black plastic bag. Beside the body was a mobile telephone, and there were clothes and a box of beer bottles nearby. Police believed the Swede had passed away not long before they arrived. They did not find anything suspicious in the room.Questioned by the police, Ms. Nitjaikong, 48, the owner of the shop opposite the apartment, said that she had no idea why the Swede committed a suicide as he was normally a bubbly character. She said he often walked around barefoot and once told her it was a kind of good foot massage – good for health. At this early stage, police had no further details. They collected physical evidence from the scene for further investigation. The body has been transferred to Forensic laboratory at Police General Hospital in Bangkok.Source: http://scandasia.com/swede-called-the-embassy-before-committing-suicide-in-pattaya/-- ScandAsia 2013-07-
Jingthing
What an unusually polite gesture. Perhaps he didn't wish the smell of his corpse to disturb the neighbors.

Jingthing
There is always the chance that the call was literally a cry out for help and that he wanted to be stopped. However, given the competence of the suicide, probably not.

Rimmer
Swedish resident’s apparent suicide at North Pattaya apartmentThe Swedish Embassy in Bangkok informed Pattaya Police of a suspected suicide which was reported to them by the victim. On Thursday afternoon the Consular Section of the Swedish Embassy received a call from Mr. David Cavallin aged 43 who stated he was about to commit suicide in his apartment situated in Soi 15 off the Naklua Road.Pattaya Police made their way to the apartment as soon as they received the report but it was too late. Police forced entry to the victim’s room at the Porpien Apartments and were confronted by the naked body of Mr. Cavallin. A black plastic bag had been placed over his head and tied tightly around his neck. There were no signs of a struggle and no visible signs of any injuries to suggest the death involved a third-party. OK, I'll bite......how do they know it was the naked soon-to-be-dead guy who made the phone call? The police would be foolish to take anything for granted.

It still needs to be fully investigated. Maybe if they could show the call came from his cell phone then that would add to the credibility of the call. I still don't understand why he was naked. He obviously knew his own intention was to kill himself and he would be found with no clothes on. Why would anyone want to be found naked for the press to take pictures and such?

lemoncake
I am not a CSI detective, but suicides do not usually place plastic bags around their heads and tie a rope around it. It is also possible he was forced to make a call?

It seems strange that someone who had the presence of mind to phone the embassy to say cheerio would not leave his affairs in better order than a naked body on the floor. Another possibility here is that the death was accidental and that another person who was present made the call before leaving the scene. I think 'Apparent suicide' is a fair description for now. fakename
If someone else was involved, then they would have had to be Swedish, so that narrows down the field a lot. It does seem strange that quite often here, people are found naked, after a suicide. Maybe it just goes with Pattaya.

I have never, ever, in my whole life have heard of someone committing suicide by tying a bag over their head ... Never...! But this seems to be a normal suicide practice here in Thailand ...!!?? Amazing ... every where else in the world Suicide is either ... Jumping off of a tall something, slashing your wrists, hanging yourself ( IN Thailand that is also done with a plastic bag over your head it seems in many cases), Pill overdose, Bullet through the head ... but just a tied pastic bag tied over the head ?????????????? Ummm... .. Amazing Thailand ! And yes .. Why naked that too ...?? Ummph!! Edited July 12, 2013 by annabel

It is also possible he was forced to make a call? Those that research the process do.... .....Google "Exit Bag". Possible that he was forced to make a call, yes but very unlikely, signs of struggle? Why force him to make a call, he would have spoken in Swedish, what Thai killer would have understood what was said, write a note would have been more controllable by your imaginary killer. No you are not a CSI anything.

kurnell
Apart from the fact that the police claim that this chap called the police station stating he was about to commit suicide (I assume that the Thai police speak very good English or Swedish), none of the other evidence looks like suicide at all. Much the same as all the other 'suicides' in Thailand.

I have it on good authority, namely the original post for this thread, that the Swedish man actually called his Swedish embassy and they called the police. Perhaps, before trying to slag the police, you should have read the beginning of the topic eh?
