My wife has decided she wants a pickup. Has to be a double cab, diesel auto and preferably Toyota. Mostly will be driven in BKK so 4WD isn't necessary. She got a few offers online and it seems to me that the best value for what she wants is the above mentioned Sportivo. Plus we can take delivery immediately.

My only concern is whether the 2.5 is grunty enough especially as her present car is a 3.0 Fortuna. Having read through a few threads here, I'm also a bit confused about the Turbo. It seems that there are 2 versions of the 2.5. Is that right? Or is one an old version so doesn't matter in this case?

I would really appreciate some advice about whether the 2.5 will be OK. I would definitely go for the 3.0 but it won't be me driving it so if she's happy that's ok. If I don't hear anything too negative from you guys we'll probably go and buy it tomorrow.

Cheers,

Check the specifications of the engine.

Take into account it is not a 4-wheel drive.

Take into account it is an automatic.

Anyway, if mostly driving in Bkk, 2.5 should be enough.

Your 3 litre Tuna makes around 171 bhp & the truck you highlight makes around 144 bhp, I would say if you are not carrying a Tonne of weight in the back it should be fine & better m.p.g than the Tunathumbsup.gif

Thanks. Yes I suppose not being a 4WD should help a bit.

OK, that's encouraging. As long as the power/torque is still there down low where you need it for city driving.

I've had a 3 litre Tuna & it has a bit of squirt & low down pull, I have also driven the basic 2.5 hilux with the 120 bhp motor this is a slug for sure, so I think the 144 bhp hilux should be ok as said if your not pulling a tonne of coconut's around with you...

The 144hp version of the 2.5L in the Hilux sportivo should be OK. The pick up is about 200kg lighter than a Fortuner so power / weight is the same. The 2.5L has less torque at low speed than the 3.0L but it is not bad compared to most other engines.

Is the Sportivo really good value at 905,000 baht? Seems to be mostly skirts and a fancy stereo for an extra 65,000 baht over the 2.5L Prerunner AT?

Maybe the 3.0L Vigo AT (861,000) or Prerunner AT (918,000) would be better, (airbags + nicer engine with more acceleration)?

Thanks, I feel more confident that the 2.5 will be ok. The obvious thing for me to do would be to drive one. However that particular dealer only has a manual available to test drive and I can't be bothered hunting around BKK to find an auto just to test drive.

I agree at full price, the Sportivo doesn't compare so favourably but the one that has been offered is incl. registration, insurance for a year, bed liner, window film and lots of plastic bits for THB860K. Other models were discounted too but not as much.

Cheers

Hrmmm, I'm certain I posted a reply to this topic earlier today...

Indeed :)

In any case, the TRD Sportivo only comes with the better 144HP 2.5L, and it's got good low down torque. So long as you're not going to be carrying around a ton, performance won't be too much less than a 3.0L Tuna.

Nice one Pop, now you've got Google profiling me:

Guess I'll have to go visit a few Mensa sites just to mess up their algorithms biggrin.png

Thanks for all the advice. I went to the dealership today and looked at the actual vehicle for the first time today. The Sportivo interior looks cheap and I couldn't believe it comes without any airbags. A couple of years ago I had my first decent crash since being a teenager which popped both airbags & did major damage but I came out with no harm whatsoever - so I'm a believer.

In the end I went for the 4x4 3.0G. In case anyone is interested it seems that the best deal we could do in Bangkok (for any model) is 50K off list price, free window film, bed liner, side visors, scuff plates & a few other small bits plus one years insurance.

Surprisingly (for me) they could deliver almost any model immediately. Our one will be ready late this afternoon.

Cheers!

Yes I now realise you're right.

Pretty strange the vigo still finds some buyers while its sucessor will come next year and there are plenty of much better choices in the market.

Is there ? Gizmos yes, but..................smile.png

My Vigo 4x4 auto is now 6 years old, has noooooooo gizmo's and still drives like new. Yeh, I have chipped it to find a happy medium. Perhaps I am an old guy that does not want gizmo's, I just want to get from A to B with nooooo probs. I wanted a proven reliable ride that could take on anything put in it's way, and it does. My forum chum who doesn't drive here, I asked ''What do you think of the ride in this truck'', he said great. smile.png

Could be that there are better choices but that's just each buyers opinion. My passion for cars in general is waning these days and pick-ups are the boring of the boring. In terms of resale value and reliability, nothing in Thailand can beat Toyota. That's why they have the market share that they do.

Just my opinion, of course.

Yep the VIGO is a safe bet, but it's the Isuzu Dmax that's the market share leader in the segment :) That's why you got 50K off and instant delivery ;)

that's what people said about the hilux tiger one year before the vigo's launch, now it looks and feels like an antique smile.png

Too true!! I had a Tiger from new for a few years and thought it was the bees knees at the time. Looking at one now is like looking at photos of myself in the '80s...How did I ever consider it good looking!!

A 3.0ltr 4x4 auto for predominantly city use? Hmmm, hope you like buying diesel.

You're probably right. But I've had a few years with a V8 Landcruiser in which I can almost watch the fuel gauge moving. Anything seems economical after that.
