Proper waterproof motorbike coats – where to buy in Chiang Mai?

The rainy season is well and truly here and I am getting, wet, wet, wet on my motorbike.

The thin cheapo standard plastic raincoats seen in the stores and at the markets are less than useless. By the time I have reached my destination I am wet and wild, and not in the way some maybe thinking.

Does anyone have knowledge of if and where it is possible to purchase the real McCoy motorbike waterproof gear that really does keep out the rain? And approx how much they cost if you know?

The pant/jacket sets are quite good with thicker material. There is a shop on Chotana road about a kilometer down from Chang Puack gate on the right side (going toward Mae Rim) that sells a lot of sneakers which you can see from the road. They also sell rain gear, or at least the shops that abut this shop do. I have bought my gear there in the past.

If you can't find the better heavy-duty ones (above), that '19 baht' shed around the back of Meechok used to do the type in your image for about 200 baht. Non-buttoned are obviously best, but wear it back to front and cut the hood off if that's all they have.

If not aiming for proper armored motorcycle gear for wet weather, the second best option would be a good camping/backpacking supply shop. On-line if necessary, although the shop behind Wat Suan Doak may have some. I have a very portable Gore-tex jacket that stuffs into its own pocket, thin enough not to be too warm for Thailand, yet protective even in a heavy rain on the bike. With the hood on under my helmet, the top half of me stays absolutely dry. I also have the matching pants to wear for the really heavy downpours.

1,500 to 2,000 is a good average price to pay for a waterproof jacket and trousers that does the job of keeping the water out.

export shops around teh city often have waterproof jackets from Columbia

north side of the moat on the outer road also has military stuff that is rainproof.
