I just obtained a re entry single as im going home for 6 weeks and I am on an ED visa atm. The stamp in my passport stated the it is valid until 9th of september which is my next visa renewal date. Is this the date i have to leave the country before OR is the the date I have to be back in Thailand? as I will be in Aus until mid late september.

TIA

You must be back in Thailand before the 9th in order to maintain your current visa status. If you arrive just before that date ensure all the documentation for your next extension is in place as you'll only have until the 9th to lodge that extension.

Arrive after the 9th and everything resets and you'll just get a 30 day visa exemption on arrival.

EDIT Since you seem to be back well after the 9th it may be better to get a new ED visa in Aus if that's possible.

A re-entry permit is only valid till your current permission to stay ends. You have to be back before that date. If not, as seems to be the case, you will need to get a new visa while abroad. (or try to extend early, before you leave and get a enw re-entry permit).

The re-entry permit only keep your current permission to stay valid, so when you re-enter Thailand you would be stamped in with a permission to stay with the same date (so in your case 9th of September). So in order to make use of your re-entry permit you will have to return to Thailand before 9th of September.

If you return to Thailand after 9th of September you will have to start over again with new Ed-visa and extensions. If you can get the necessary paperwork in time, you could ask Immigration if it is possible to get your next extension before you leave, and then protect that extension with a new re-entry permit (the one you just got is linked to your current permission to stay).

That stinks, oh well i guess the next move is obtaining the docs from the school and asking immigration when the earliest I can renew my extension date is. Then I wont have to worry once home. 6 weeks was the date i guessed i would be home for although it could be longer. So there goes 1000bht down the poopa and a waste of the morning.

Thanks for all the info lads, Thailand really is a trap jj.

The immigration rules are quite easy and probably easier and fairer than most countries. Just learn what they are and follow them.

I have a similar situation although I will come back to Thailand 2 days before my ed visa extension expires. Will they let me back in the country with only 2 days left or will this be an issue at immigration?

They will let you enter but may ask if that is all you want if you are eligible for a visa exempt entry.

You might want to check with your school to be sure they have the paperwork ready for your extension.
