BANGKOK: -- Slain drug suspect Warissanon Reungkamon's wife is believed to have fled with Bt100 million in cash after her husband was killed in a Monday evening gunfight in Bangkok, police told the press yesterday.

Narcotics Suppression Bureau commander Pol Maj-General Thanai Apichartseni said that after the shooting, which also wounded suspect Pichet Phumdokmai, police raided Warissanon's home in Pathum Thani's Lam Luk Ka district and found 50,000 yaba tablets. Then on Wednesday, police raided the man's five rented flats in the same district and seized more evidence, including some 137,000 yaba tablets, 650 grams of "ice", four guns, 600 rounds of ammunition and a bullet-proof vest.

Police investigators also found Bt2.3 million in cash left in one of the rooms, and concluded that Warissanon's wife Sakulrat Suwansukkho, 32, had fled with the rest of the cash, Thanai said. The building's security camera footage showed Sakulrat and two other women leaving the premises with three suitcases and three backpacks.

Pol General Pongsapat Pong-charoen, who is secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, said investigators had also discovered implements used to change imported yaba into Warissanon's recipe and repackaged with a "seahorse" stamp. Pongsapat is calling on Sakulrat to surrender and be with her four-month-old son, who was found near Warissanon's body. A manhunt is on for the rest of the gang.

Separately, police presented results of a Thai-Dutch police collaboration that led to the seizure of some 10 tonnes of Safrole oil on Monday and the arrest of five male suspects - three Thais, one from Myanmar and a Chinese. The oil can be used to produce 86 million ecstasy pills worth Bt80 billion.

And while we are at it, how did Thailand's finest work out that particular sum so quickly and so accurately? To be fair, maybe the wounded suspect gave them that figure, but...

I hope the child has a decent chance in life.

Last year, a farang friend had a chunk of money stolen from his north Thailand office. The good news: the cops found the teenage culprits and the loot. The bad news; the cops only returned 10% of the seized money. Of course, the cops had excuses for keeping 90%......

Nice one. Seriously I would say he is the Dutch police officer who was in charge of the investigation and had travelled to Thailand to brief the BIB and get their assistance.

Whatever the circumstances in this case, it would appear that at last the BIB have broken one of the 'bigs' of the drug scene rather than the apprehension of pathetic 'mules' at BKK airport.

Well; they may have broken a biggy but decent 'intelligence' work before the hit would have revealed that this guy had multiple homes/apartments that he worked from and a properly co-ordinated raid could have been set up hitting all known targets at the same time, or at least on the same day. Do the BIB ever, ever do anything properly apart from collect helmet fines ?

I'm not sure if the BIB actually cracked this or the Dutch authorities. Maybe it is like the 2 year investigation by the Australian Federal Police into the attempted importation of 250M (AUD) of drugs into Australia. The Thais had no knowledge of it until Fed Pol requested their assistance in the arrests in Thailand. Thailand however took for credit for the investigation and the arrests.

I would put my money on this being a Dutch investigation with the assistance of the Thai authorities.
