Brown rice in rice cooker ... help

Recommended Posts

I don't cook much rice at home but for health reasons I'm using brown rice at home.

I have a standard rice cooker. No brown rice setting.

Well it is turning out SUPER MUSHY.

So how do you cook your brown rice in a standard rice cooker to not be super mushy?

Clean and rinse first or not?

Soak for how many hours or no soak.

Water to rice ratio

Thank you.

I always clean and rinse. No need to soak. If it's coming out mushy you're probably using too much water. I usually use a 2:3 rice to water ratio. For example, for one cup rice I would use 1.5 cups water. Granted I don't usually do brown rice, but it shouldn't be that much different.

Brown rice is MUCH different. It needs more water, that I know. Soaking for two hours is also usually suggested. You are probably right though about too much water.

I appreciate any attempts at help though, but if it isn't brown rice specific, it's not really meaningful.

Yeah, you're right, I'm looking online and everybody suggests more water, or soaking. Because of all the extra bran I guess?

So... reduce the amount of water, but I don't know by how much whistling.gif

If nobody who knows better comes along, you could always do the trial and error method... if the rice is mushy, use less water. If the rice is hard, use more water. It could potentially be a lot of wasted rice, though, unless you have a dog or something to feed it to.

brown rice cooked on the stove top without soaking is 3:1 water to rice...probably not much different using a rice cooker...

I always wash the rice regardless of the type, etc...

no need to soak

as per andrewrooney suggested 1.5 water to 1 cup of rice

I do brown rice all the time in rice cooker. 1.5 water to 1 rice. Just put in rice and water and cook immediately, no soaking. Some times the bottom of the rice gets sticky and crusty so can try a bit extra water which may help but not much more. Personally, I like the bottom layer crusty. Note it is a big rice cooker and I only do two cups of rice at a time which may have an impact on how it comes out.

Ditto. Quick rinse, 1:1.5 water, half a chicken stock cube (crumbled) and heavily bruised stick of lemongrass (if it's available) and one and half hours in the rice cooker. Bloody delicious.

Spend 1500 Baht and buy a cooker with the brown rice option. Problem solved.

Do it on the stove top in a pot! Spend the 1500 baht on "spirits" that you can drink until you get it right!

Don't know which brown rice you use guys...If it's really brown rice, and not half refined, even 2 cups of water for 1 cup of rice is too hard for me, so 2,5 cups of water is just ok.. Oh , and it takes 1 hour to be cooked.

I rinse the rice, which leaves it wet, then measure water to rice 2.1:1 and it comes out perfect every time ("perfect," of course, is a matter of personal taste). Lets water makes a harder more chewy grain; more water makes it softer.

A brown rice option on a cooker means nothing if you do not get the water to rice ratio correct. We use a plain basic rice cooker (with only an on/off button) and it works just fine.

By the way, rice is long grin hom mali from our own fields.

Good for you Jingthing. Another brilliant post. You may be the first to reach 100,000!

Don't like the brown rice on its own........... I have a Rice keeper bin with its own cup, the bin holds 2 packs of rise, so buy 1x white and 1x brown and mix together, taste is real good...

wash rice, Add 3 cups to rice cooker and just over the pots '4' marking with water, just under this if white rice.. switches itself off when cooked..

No idea if Rice cooker are different ? bought one called 'National' way back in March 2003, used 3x or more per week..

Rice is good for dogs and there coat, also for upset tummy, all 8 of my dogs love rice.. also bird eat it, I put out on the bird table 2 or 3 x a week

I have found soaking for 1 hour then using the normal white rice setting on the rice cooker works. As in the above post we mix jasmine white, brown and black rice together in equal portions and then cook as per normal white rice. I find if you leave it on the warm setting for about an extra 15 - 30 minutes after cooking it comes out nice. My wife was a confirmed white rice only person but now finds this mix has more flavour.

Not sure if you have consumed 1500 Bht of spirits, you're still able to do anything right biggrin.png

Agree with rinsing the rice and a little more water than you'd usually use with white rice...............and adding a desert spoon of coconut oil before cooking helps stop it stick and imparts just the faintest of flavour!!

No mind if you mess up. Put the rice in an air-tight jar with some sugar, and you're on your way to making lao khao. You'll never look back.
