Rather drink vinegar ? Er, I thought this thread was about the high price of Magners Original Irish Cider in Thailand ??? Officially lost - pls advise

if the worse comes to the worse magners is the only one in the cash and carry in korat i will have to get used to it.all the importers seem to be down in patts.i used to order 5cases at a time that is no problem but the delivery went up 50% and you never knew when they would turn up.i remember pricing strongbow down in phuket 10yrs ago 140bht.how much it is now i shudder to think.tesco uk.24cans x 440ml =£16. 768bht.so there is plenty of choice [ciders] at reasonable prices but not here.

whats your favourite tipple mr.w.

30yrs ago i had to drink kloster what ever happened to that.

so come on you thai brewers start making some cider around 5% alc/vol.no more otherwise the locals wont be able to handle it,

unless they put plenty of ice in it.

If you want to feel better about the price of you Magners get yourself down to the "Irish" pub at Central Pattaya. There you can enjoy that fine beverage sick.gif for only 350 Baht a bottle. Personally I much prefer Thatchers and can get that in several bars around Mabprachan at 135-150 Baht. Or for real money saving drink Crumpton Oaks at home at 92 Baht a can.

The importer of Magner's also imports some other fine examples of carbonated urine...

VB, Fosters, Millers Draft...

60% price differential? Not bad for the punter when that's going towards the acquisition of 4 new corporate jets :P

But that's the thing - he wants the Thai government to intervene in a 'price fixing racket' for a product that he doesnt actually like. blink.png

Thank God for Tiger Beer, I say. I can even get it in Malaysia. clap2.gif

yes mr.w.your quite right i dont drink magners but it seems my options are running out,so magners will be my last resort,i am quite happy with stowford press, but last month i got no delivery.cider has become the most popular drink in the uk.overtaking beer the last couple of yrs.but my gripe is about the tax we are paying.i have drunk cider all over the world including on cruise ships but never paid as much as what thailand are charging.as for drinking in pattaya well say no more in the early 80's a bottle of singha or kloster was 100bht at the bars and that was for a small one[beer that is] tesco's uk.sell singha 630ml.at around 112bht.and their own brand of cider for 85bht.a 2litre bottle which in fact is drinkable better then singha or leo,so it is cheap to produce.as chang brewers sponsor a lot of football in the uk.so aint it about time they started to produce the amber nectar.the big supermarkets here in thailand surely has some scope to import and sell at a more realistic price eg.john keplars is around 100bht a 500ml.can from the importers if you order 5 or more cases then there's delivery on top which in uk.pounds is £262 who goes out and spends that on one item.if i could get to grips with the local stuff it wouldnt be to bad if i mixed my purchases.

i am not a tourist i am here for the rest of my life [on a frozen pension] and a few bob savings so me asking for a little help from the thai gov.as everything else will fall on deaf ear's.one thing my.wf.never complains yet it was her that made it possible for me to retire here with a comfortable living and a happy one,so i have to play ball with her as well.cheers. taffy

oh meatboy... You do make me laugh... Desperate pleas for the government to end this atrocity...

The Thai government isn't the only government in this world to levy hefty taxes on alcohol imports...

Australia is guilty as well, probably due to protectionism but even locals have to pay the Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) @ 29% and GST 10% some pay less due to volume levels not exceeding prescribed limits

But let's look at it...

A$

Customs value (Cval): 400.00

Customs duty (Duty) @ 5% of Cval: 20.00 (Payable)

International transport and insurance or postage (T&I) 75.00

Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) @ 29 per cent of (Cval+Duty+T&I) 143.55 (Payable)

Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI) (Cval+Duty+T&I+WET) 638.55

Goods and Services Tax (GST) @ 10% of the VoTI 63.85 (Payable)

Total payable Duty + WET + GST: 227.4

And cider is subjected to WET in Australia (just to keep it relative to the OP)

There's further concessions etc available with various FTA's in place but if you're a big producer you won't be escaping the elephant in the room...

we can talk about many things the government tax , i like cheese , i like Australian wine, i like western food. all have huge taxes on them , if i went to Europe i would be paying big tax on food items too from Australia this is life , one thing that you can be sure of is taxes

The HUGE tax on Australian Wine is in place to protect the Thai wine manufacturers. The yet to be discovered local industry needs all the help it can get. bah.gif

And the even higher tax Australia puts on cigarettes is to protect Australian tobacco growers. Oh wait. most of the tobacco is grown outside Australia.

I wouldn't say that it is "undiscovered" there's a fair amount of press out there on Thai wine - especially Monsoon Valley. Sells at the Cellar Door for about ฿850 if I remember correctly for their entry level stuff. I think I paid about ฿1,200 for their new sparkling extra sec rosé when I took my family down there after my wedding.

It's pretty pricey given what it is - even at their wholesale price - considering there's plenty of imported stuff that is infinitely better than it, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

I'd be interested to see how they go with exporting it.

tuky - what huge tax on Australian wine?

The tax specifically to Australian wine is now less than 10% and in 2 years will be a thing of the past.

It's the excise tax (currently at 60%) that is the killer, but that tax is levied on everyone.

I see in the newspaper the other day some fellow was talking about licensing smokers in Australia.

If I remember correctly an AUD10 bottle of wine was costing AUD40-50 when I lived in Thailand. (2002 - 2008). Do you mean to say that prices are now realistic?

But anyway, my post was tongue in cheek. I probably shouldn't have hit reply.

sato is thai cider and it costs 25b a bottle

Sato is certainly not cider. It is a rice wine.

taffy, if you can resort to Magners surely you can give Toger / Leo a shot ? Mate I'm not trying to ruin your retirement here, but you seem to be making a rod for your own back - beer isnt perfect, but it's cheap and it's sold pretty much everywhere. Win-win !

thanks mr.w.i do drink chang but i have to have lime jus with it,having suffered with hiatus hernia for over 40yrs the lime jus does me no favours.i am going to give the export a try,2days on beer and one on cider will be an ease on my pocket.finance is no problem nice house, car.ect and there is only me,wf,and dog no debt.i think its being with the wf.toooooooooooooooo long she is one non spender[25yrs] all her freinds here dont like going shopping with here as she like's to use the money off vouchers in the supermarkets also she will stand around the sale shelf waiting for staff to put the reduction tickets on,she doesnt know what losing face is.one example we have the bigest house on the mooban,a drive for 4cars but for three yrs she only had a rusty old bicycle

walked 2kilomtrs.to catch the 8bht.bus.but nosey neighbours soon found out not to wisper behind her back.you know the shit, why havent you got this and that being married to a farang and here bros.and sis.know not to come with the begging bowl,so i dont take advantage with what i can spend.anyway mr.w.it looks like having to replace windows and doors around the house[30in total] that will give her a headache.

If these prices 'don't wash' with you, then I suggest you go open your own shops and sell things at the 'right' price. I'll be taking bets on who goes bust fastest.

Unfortunately I don't. Watching horses running around a paddock never excited me. Nor watching greyhounds do the same.

Just an honours degree in economics followed up a few years later with a Masters. No doubt that will mark me down in the eyes of some.

European monarchs are mostly inbreds too.

I don't see your point, or how this relates to the price of booze in Thailand.

If one's an alcoholic, then they have a drinking problem.

If one complains about how much it costs for his alcohol, then that too is a drinking problem.

I guess I was to subtle for you.

When I relocated to LOS I noticed that my beer consumption rather instantly went up from two bottles/week to a bottle per day. I realised straight away that the reason for this was thirst. I was thirsty for fluids, nothing else.

I am a real sucker for quality beer, and at two bottles a week I don't give a flying fig if the cost is 60 or 300 baht per bottle. Sharing a perfectly cooled bottle of Trappist with a friend - how do you put a price tag on that?

I'll continue drinking water and juices during the week and devour a bottle of quality beer here and there, despite knowing that Thailand is making an absolute fortune on the tax.

op I suggest you try the locals version of white lightening

i couldnt handle that white lightning in the uk.and the special red, when i had trouble finding a suplier here for cider i tried some home made 1.5lts.was more than enough had to be 50% plus.as chang does a lot of sponsoring in the uk.i am goner try and convince them that cider is the way to go forward the only problem i could see is growing the apples[bitter sweet].i have seen some story of someone from the cider country in the uk.somerset starting a cider brewery in laos.the trouble here in thailand everything revolves arround patts or bkk.

just a thought is what you posted about the local brew are thai drivers banned from drinking it?
