BANGKOK, Aug 14 - Metropolitan police in the Thai capital reaffirmed today that theft was the motive behind the murder of businessman Akeyuth Anchanbutr.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Commander Anuchai Lekbumrung ruled out a statement by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) which rejected a police conclusion that Mr Akeyuth was strangled or squeezed to death at the throat.

NHRC chairman Niran Pitakwatchara said an autopsy report indicated that Mr Akeyuth died of asphyxiation.

Pol Maj Gen Anuchai said police investigation on the case was based on available evidence, adding that he has yet to receive an official document from the NHRC.

If the NHRC's information is useful to police investigation, the authorities will adjust its conclusion before filing the case with the court, he said.

He stood firm that evidence attained by police was sufficient to charge the suspects with theft.

He said police should wrap up the case and submit it to the Attorney General within this week.

Suwat Apaipak, lawyer of the Akeyuth's case, said he would wash his hands of the case given several threats on his life and a recent attempt to murder him.

He said Mr Akeyuth's family did not appreciate his handling of the case and blamed him for his involvement.

Mr Suwat said investigative specialists have accompanied the NHRC to Mr Akeyuth's residence and the site where his body was found in Phatthalung province, and found evidence that the murder location was arranged.

He said one of the suspects, Santiparb Pengduang, earlier contacted him through a third person, confessing that he was hired by "people in uniform" for Bt3 million to kill Mr Akeyuth.

Mr Santiparb reportedly said he received payment at six-digit figures (several hundred thousand baht) and that there were two earlier failed attempts to kill the former businessman. (MCOT online news).

Doesn't make make the NHRC statement any less true.

Isn't anyone in the police and government concerned that 1 day the truth about things comes out?? I wonder

These 3 incarcerated suspects have the life expectancy of a horse race, and they will have been reminded to keep quiet. I would not like to be in their position. NHRC need to get stuck into this quickly before it is forgotten like shipping moo and southern rights lawyer, or anyone else that had legal wranglings with a certain champion of democracy.

Edit to add that Akeyuth no doubt upset lots of people with his ponzi scheme but that was over 30 years ago, although to be fair it wouldn't be the first time in Thai history where we saw supposed spontaneous collective outrage years later. ie asset seizure 2006, riots 2010.

So many facts from the autopsy contradicted the suspects' accounts.

The suspects said he was strangled by a shoelace and buried within one day.

The autopsy said he was asphyxiated and had died seveal days before burial, as shown by the different rates of decomposition of parts of his body, the parts exposed to air decomposing faster.

The police can't answer the scientific facts.

Hi Siripon,

You obviously have great first hand insight into this case, please can you inform everyone about the scientific details and break down of the case and your sources for acquiring this knowledge? I think most people have just been reading the various media reporting which have limited factual basis and are in most cases opinions or here say. Please share your more detailed information with the rest of us layman.

I read the autopsy reports in Thai newspapers and even in the unmentionable one.No doubt if you google a little you will find the details of how he was killed, not a shoelace round the neck, and how his body decomposed at different rates, certainly not killed just a day before found, as claimed by the suspects.

I believe them….. I mean, those 3 cops in the photo…well, they look so honest and all… LOL

It's those caps that does it. Favoured by cops in all banana republics - and the Gestapo.

Are the two colonels there to offer 'moral support'? Is it a show of force? How many Thai cops does it take to speak to reporters?

You summed it in one, Banana republic, except difficult sometimes to find good bananas.

We came to the banana republic because the girls are great carpenters; they'll make your banana stand, with more craftsmanship and at a lower cost than the ones back home.

As for this case, no doubt one day the truth will leak out; eventually it always does. Like the chiang mai murder case they're trying to prevent from making shockwaves as well connected people are exposed.

I haven't really followed this case in great detail. However surely someone with as much wealth as that and with as many enemies as that, would have bodyguards. I know the driver is the accused but was there only one bodyguard.

Those ridiculous hats scream "liar".

This is a cover up. What attorney gets death threats when the case if supposedly already solved? What policemen wear their uniforms when proffering a murder contract? This case is full of lies and contradictions. The true 'masterminds' of this murder are in a position of power and they will be protected.
