I have got little marks on my windscreen like the crap that falls from trees. My wife and her sister can't get them off, no matter how hard they try :o

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to remove them?

A lot of stuff that falls from trees (sap, bird shit etc) is acid and will actually etch the glass. No amount of scrubbing will shift it :o

use a solvent like petrol to loosen or dissolve it and then clean with a window cleaner like windex.

if the glass is already etched then there is not a lot that you can do.

dont use those dishwashing pads either , they will scratch the glass.

Try toothpaste on the etched areas. Brown paper is the same as very fine grit paper too.

If it's only gunk baked on, try commercially available Tar and Bug remover.

I had stuff like that successfully removed from the local car clean shop. Avoid parking underneath mango trees.

Try WD-40

It is amazing stuff and will get all sorts of crap off your car without wrecking the paint. Just spray a bit on and let it soak in for a bit before wiping off with a clean rag.

It does the job of 10 different products and no home is complete without it on the shelf.

Diesel (distillate) fuel does a good job... it also removes tar and bitumen spatters from your paintwork as well, without damaging the surface.

dont use those dishwashing pads either , they will scratch the glass.

I find that newspaper does the best job.

The newspaper reference reminded me.

My dad always used the cut end of a potato to remove marks, before polishing with last weeks Sunday Times (Ok News of the World).

If your screen is actually scratched you can get it repaired easily I had a bad stone chip with 3/4inch starring on my Toyota Wish , just off my line of vision and I had a sucessfull repair with specialised resin injection, it is now not noticable from inside and only from the outside if you know where to look .

I had it repaired at a specialist windscreen repairer in Macro Car park at Macro Chaeng Whattana it cost 1000 baht and took 1 hour . Whilst there I saw some serious cracks being repaired on other cars and an excellent job done on scratches made by windscreen wipers .. by now you may have actually scratched the surface and resin bonding may be the answer . I avoid the sticky tree sap problem by using Rain Off on the windscreen a silcone coating you apply once a month ( turtle wax make one type ) and I also add this to the washer bottle to top up the treatment . It is extremely effective and the water balls up and blows off the screen like water off a ducks back or for Thailand water off a Lotus Leaf .

Good Luck !
