Sweeping generalisation I know but ...

Two things you should never do.

Don't stand between Thais and money and ...

Never stand between Thais and food.

Every nationality talks a lot about food. It's interesting to a lot of people. Hence the popularity of tv food shows, celebrity chefs. It forms a key part of a country's culture and identity. Same in France, Spain, Italy, Argentina, every country ive been to.

Pictures: Thais love taking photos, especially of a. themselves b. their food. I don't know why. I guess because they love technology, etc. Think of it as a challenge, how can you best photobomb them.

We take photo of food because we want others to come and try if it pass or fail our standards. If the restaurant is famous, photos will become evidence that we really been there. Something like advertisement IMO.

Yes they do a bit. I work with an older Thai woman who 90% of the time always talks about food. Her only interest it seems. For a while I found it slightly irritating when she would gossip to others about my food choices of not eating her spicy food (unfortunately my stomach can't hold up) or when I ate a salad or sandwich. And I always politely refused any food I couldn't eat (don't want to eat cakes and things) and she would look surprised.

But now, it has no irritation, as others say, some talk about the weather, sport or girls a lot. Yes, they do seem a bit too obsessed with it, but I just find it quite cute and amusing and let's face it, their food is great.

Actually, on the Farm, the Thai men don't seem to talk about food that much.

More the weather, dissolved Oxygen content in the fish pond and do we need to start the Aerators this morning?

Or the boxing, or the lack of the Bald Uncle's hair.

Or the Funeral that they should attend because the neighbour's wife (differentiating because it's his 2nd wife ... but they have know the man for a long time) across the pond died ... and his bad luck because also his son died from a motorbike accident some years earlier ... and they were the people in his world ... so much sadness for him ... and so much land he owns!

The girls just seem to gossip about everything mostly ... yesterday it was mostly about dtot, dtot (ตด) or farting ... it got the most laughs.

The gf and I talk sometimes of future plans ... what's around the corner. We also talk about mutual friends in Australia (Thai and Aussie) and what they are up to.

I got the 'look at this beautiful handbag 5 min sales pitch' last night from the gf.

As an aside, we are planning to build in a room under the Parents House which is currently a communal sleeping area. It's adjoining the Mothers bedroom and I'm fighting the Idea because the thought of some horizontal folk dancing (in the new room) with the Mother next door and a pillow over my mouth to silence any indiscreet sound doesn't have appeal. I think I'll lose that one though ... ermm.gif

So I currently looking at the costs and various blocks to be used in the construction and the gf and I were discussing the various window options that exist. cool thai house is a great place to research along with this forum's Building Forum.

The gf and talk about the best style of build and her preference for the Q-con style of block rather then the standard hollow Thai concrete block (the Yanks call Cinder' blocks and we Aussies call them skinny Besser Blocks) because she likes the insulating qualities of the Q-con block and the fact that they require lass foundations (she obviously did her independent research between one ต and another ต !

I pointed out the price differential of being almost 10 times as expensive ... I may win that battle yet.

So off to bed and the gf reminds me of the days conversations with a quick dtot, dtot ... lucky for me the fan was blowing the other way.

Man, have you seen that those girls chow down on ... no wonder they dtot, dtot so much!

Oh .. that's what you asked about ... Thais talking about food ALL the time.

humm ... just one of the many subjects along with cost of Fish Pellets, by the bag or by the Pallet.

Such is life on the Farm ... biggrin.png

One reason for which I have shunned going out to eat with my Thai colleagues after two or three experiences: they only talk about food. Boring conversations. No intellect.

And they oblige you to share the food (whether they like it or not).

Any other subject will easily lead to having opinion on issues, which might lead to disagreement, loss of face, make them look stupid, invariably truncate the very much sought after sanuk sanuk, sabai sabai.
