Predicted car sales for 2025 are set at 600,000 units, a slight increase from the 570,000 units sold in 2024. However, it's the EV market that's truly transforming the landscape, altering production demands and strategies along the way. EV Market Growth: A Closer Look The first seven months of 2025 have already seen 66,000 EV registrations, nearly matching the total EV sales for the entire previous year, which stood at 67,000 units. This upsurge is driving EV market share towards the 20% mark, with the potential to reshape the automotive industry in Thailand. The driving force behind this shift is the government's EV3.0 and EV3.5 incentive schemes. These programmes require manufacturers to produce locally as a counterbalance to imports, ensuring that the benefits of government support are captured within the national economy. The Excise Department remains vigilant, requiring monthly updates from manufacturers to track compliance. Manufacturers Respond MG Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd., a key player in the market, is upbeat about meeting these local production targets. Pongsak Lertrudeewattanavong, Deputy Managing Director, expressed confidence in their ability to produce the 20,000 units required for offset production, noting that they have already completed half of this target. "With robust sales backing us, we're not worried. Our production and marketing capacities are strong," he stated. Regulatory Shifts to Assist Compliance Acknowledging the challenges manufacturers face, the government has introduced more flexible measures to ease the offset production requirements. These include extending deadlines from EV3.0 to EV3.5, allowing the withdrawal of previously claimed benefits even for vehicles not yet subsidised, and offering 1.5 times production credits for exported units. This approach aims to alleviate state subsidy costs, as exported vehicles are exempt from the 150,000 baht per car support. Nevertheless, there is a note of caution from authorities. If manufacturers refrain from exporting in anticipation of this flexibility, the domestic market risks oversupply and potential price wars. Pongsak warned, "While consumers might enjoy reduced prices in the short term, such fierce competition could destabilise the industry long-term." EV Market Share Jumps Dramatically With 66,000 EV registrations recorded, the EV market now constitutes 17.7% of total car registrations, a significant rise from 11.4% in 2024. Analysts predict this figure might surpass 20% by the end of the year, buoyed by increasing consumer confidence, a broader range of models, and climbing fuel prices. EVs offer competitive pricing compared to conventional cars, and their lower maintenance demands add to their appeal. The countdown is on as consumers rush to purchase EVs before current subsidies expire in 2026. Once the EV3.0 subsidy of up to 150,000 baht per unit ends, the excise tax is expected to increase from 2% to 10%, likely driving prices up. BYD and Neta: Leaders Under Pressure Amid these shifts, BYD and Neta stand out with the highest offset production expectations. Neta, having ceased its contract manufacturing line, faces scrutiny with 19,000 cars still needed for offset production, putting its 2025 target in doubt. BYD, however, remains robust in its market strategy. As the leading EV brand in Thailand and ranking fourth in overall car sales, BYD faces the responsibility of offsetting 30,000 imported cars. It intends to commence significant export operations from its facility in Rayong by September. "Export allowances help us maintain domestic market stability," commented a source from BYD. Finance Ministry’s Long-Term Strategy Kulaya Tantitemit, Director-General of the Excise Department, emphasised that the relaxed regulations were designed to provide options that not only help manufacturers meet their obligations but also prevent market saturation and subsequent price dumping. So far, no manufacturers have applied for an offset production extension, although applications remain open until December 2025. Apart from Neta, most brands are considered on track with their commitments. A National Vision for EV Leadership Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary-General of the Board of Investment (BOI) and EV Board secretary, noted that extending deadlines from EV3.0 to EV3.5 enables more seamless integration of operational strategies while enhancing regulatory oversight over subsidies. The government’s ultimate objective remains aligning with its 30@30 policy—ensuring that 30% of all vehicles produced are EVs by 2030. This ambition positions Thailand to become a leading regional hub for EV production. The automotive sector faces many challenges as it adapts to volatile global markets, fluctuating consumer demand, and advancements in technology. Yet, it is this adaptability and strategic foresight that will cement Thailand’s status as a powerhouse in the burgeoning EV market. As players like BYD and Neta adjust strategies to meet commitments, the industry as a whole moves closer to achieving a sustainable and visionary future. With a dynamic landscape ahead, the Thai automotive market stands poised for significant transformation, driven largely by the innovative strides within the EV sector. It's a transformation that not only shifts gears but also reshapes the road ahead for one of the Southeast Asian logisticians, promising both challenges and opportunities in equal measure.
