Have any of you tried to raise tomatoes from seeds procured from other countries such as the US? In other countries they grow much larger tomatoes than those available here in markets.

I have tried but the plants start out well but seem to wither after getting about 10 inches tall. Appears to be some disease but I am stymied about the actual cause.

Is there a service here such as the County Agent's Office in the US? They operate out of the Department of Agriculture and give advice on crops and gardening.

kjun12 tomatoes are very fickle and can develop fungus easy , the soil has to be a decent ph level and inspection of soil as to too much organics etc , you cannot plant tomatoes after certain other plants , in the same bed as before where they were growing , as David48 suggests have a look on the farming forum, good luck to you.

With care and experience its quite possible, but there are some differences:

Grow in semishade

Cover with eg clear plastic "roof" and strictly control watering (only at the base)

Engage in crop rotation after every harvest - in between plant soil cleansing crops (to prevent nematodes and other soil borne diseases)

A good way to get started is to only buy humidity tolerant DRV's (Disease Resistant Varieties) although these tend to be medium sized only, an to grow them at the start of the dry season.
