Teachers background check in Thailand

I have seen a lot of foreigners get caught/arrested/deported for sexually assaulted a minor in Thailad. My kids are in an international school and I do trust their teachers and caretakers but I that doesn't stop me from wondering if schools here do background checks on teachers and staff? Thanks.

I would imagine that International schools enforce the same standards in terms of recruitment as back home. Although, I would guess it depends on what school, as some are pseudo international schools.

To get a work permit you need to be cleared by the Thai police department. They send us downtown to the station near Siam Paragon and we drop off our information. After about a week you can go pick up a certificate that says you are ok to work. I dont know how much they look into, i would imagine that they dont look at your international record but i could be wrong on that one.

Even a police check would do no good if the pervert had never been caught......keep an eye on your kids and be aware of any weirdo acting people/teachers/staff hanging around the school. Better safe than sorry. Not trying to be paranoid but we all know there are a LOT of weird people wandering around Thailand...both falang and thai.

I work in a Kindergarten and not once have they asked me or any of the other foreign teachers for a police background check.

I have tried numerous times to get across how important it is to make sure no undesirables end up working there but it just falls on deaf ears.

'I have seen a lot of foreigners get caught/arrested/deported for sexually assaulted a minor in Thailad.'

really now?

interesting

details please

anymore than anywhere else?

I would also be interested about the source of the accusation.

Although from personal experience I have known a lot of 'alleged' teachers here in Thailand that I am glad were never involved with the teaching of my kids, none of them were IMHO, a risk to the kids in a sexual way.

BTW, this is not a teacher bashing post; I have the greatest respect for most teachers here, qualified or not, who are doing a job that I would never have the patience to do.............wink.png

When my kids were at school here, my wife was paranoid about the toilets. A lot of school toilets are in separate buildings or have separate external entrances. There was spate of kids being stolen from school toilets in Bangkok a while ago (according to the Mrs) and since then she is adamant they are not safe.

Having said that, I have walked into my kids' old school, past the security guards who barely even glance at me - and several blocks did not have their own toilet facilities (requiring kids to cross a play ground alone and use one opposite) - I even walked in to use the toilet. Sure, the security guards may have raised an eyebrow if I tried to walk out with a kid - but if I was a nonce I could have "snatched and run" easily enough I am sure.

She was a school teacher herself when we met (18+ years ago) but kids were not allowed to go to the toilet unescorted (she worked in a private kindergarten 5-7 year olds) and the toilet was at the other end of the building to the road entrance. She was never worried about the teaching staff themselves however - I think other Thai teachers would suss this out fairly quickly and deal with it (possibly severely) - same for foreign teachers, the purves are easy to spot by a real teacher as they know through experience and teaching just what is acceptable behaviour (and can spot what is not or borderline).

When I was a teacher, the Head of the English dept took me to the Labour dept with my credentials etc, and that was it, police not involved at all.
