Bangkok on mission to clear footpaths

Footpaths have become the parking stations of some motorcycle taxi groups.

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok Metropolitan Administration last week removed 3,118 unlicensed ad banners installed near bus stops and on footpaths, as part of its plan to restore the order of footpaths across the capital city.

Legal actions will be taken against the owners, for causing damage to public properties - trees and footpaths. Civil lawsuits will also be launched, said BMA spokesperson Tridao Apaiwong.

The consensus reached at the city council’s meeting on Monday is to remove unlicensed banners and phone booths. The motorcycle taxi stations will also be re-arranged.

Tridao said that the transport office has awarded permission to over 8,000 ad banners. The office is now working on the mapping and district offices will check if the banners are located accordingly to the mapping.

"BMA also considers to lower the number of banners," she said.

On motorcycle taxi, there will be a discussion with the Transport Ministry’s Transport Department over the parking stations. At present, many of them use footpaths as the parking stations though this is illegal. Violation is subjected to Bt2,000 in fine.

Tridao said that there are about 200,000 motorcycle taxi in Bangkok.

Thats a good news ..... between street vendors , motorcycle etc .... its easier to walk on the roads . well done if you can succeed.

Finally, but I wonder where the exceptions are going to be (pay-off's)

I have never had a problem with an ad banner that I can remember. Traders with their stalls, food carts with their tables and chairs, uneven paving slabs, motorcycle taxis riding on the pavements, kerbs sometimes a foot high but none of these problems seem important to the BMA.

I said before: even out the pavements, ban motocys from driving on them...and I will happily live with food- and other- vendors.

Are we forgetting political party signs blocking footpaths? Fine themselves?

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

So how will the "city" police supplement their incomes?

And where are they going to put them? On the road?

I assume you need a wheelchair to get around, otherwise it would be an interesting wish :o

Great! I hate the banners, always have to walk on the road to get around them. The worst is the banners in places so that it obstructs your view when driving and trying to turn left or right. That's why so many people creep across the road and block the traffic. They simply can't see because of the signs. Down right dangerous.

Me too. I live in Issan ans it's bad enough here. I try to avoid all Thai cities like the plague.

Restaurants, VW bars, mobile banks, and street vendors also need to go, depending on the area.

I'm fine with food vendors ... it wouldn't be Thailand without them. But the other stuff can definitely go. And a curse on all motorcycles ... moving & parked ... on the walkways.

But we'll all die of starvation! Where will we all buy our dinners? Also, a lot of people will lose their liveliehoods.

Maybe, though, this ties in with lowering the price of luxury goods. As we won't be able to buy the copies anymore, we'll all rush to buy the still over-priced, unneeded, originals.

Makes the rich richer and further raises the cost of living for the proles. Typical PTP principles.

Nice move.

Good thing the authorites will clear away the banners- that will mean more space for vendors and Africa drug dealers on lower Sukumvitt...

Well they aren't messing around.

About 100 cops, some massive trucks and a load of cleaning people hit Khoa San Road this afternoon... removed ALL the roadside stalls - I've never seen khao san like that (as opposed to normal monday afternoon cleanups)

I've never actually been able to see the road/footpath or the shophouse entries on Khoa San before!

I thought Chalerm was going to have the footpaths cleared years ago, within 90 days. Or was he jive talkin' ? whistling.gif

ummm......there are 200k motor bike taxis in BKK?!?!

200k!?!? Wow.

I saw something about 65k hookers in Pattaya, so wouldn't be suprised if there were 200k taxi drivers in Bangkok. Theres 5 or 6 on every street corner.

There will always be talk of reform. Who will enforce the reform?

The only Thais that seem to get off their butt to do anything are Lumpini park homeless "protestors" and parking attendants with a whistle. These are the only relentless Thais I see in our society.

Is it already governor election time again?

How will this horrendous plan affect Bangkok's claim to "Best Footpath Food City" claim?

kow-mung-gai doesn't taste the same inside a shop!

About time.

Duh, all this does is amp up the tea money from the violators.
