Hog Head Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 I am thinking of getting a traditional styled sidecar rig - no Thai food cart abomination but a proper Steib style chair on a suitable bike Anyone seen such a thing for sale - must have the chair on the left
moe666 Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Unless the bike has been sold with the sidecar from new it is illegal to add later.

dogpoo Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 You must obay the law here otherwise you could be given, wait for it, a small fine and be on your way!! 1
stoli Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 All side cars are illegal. So is Prostitution, Viagra, fake Rolex's, cell phone copies, etc. Just find one you like on the street, and tell them you want one of those. Some are correctly built, some aren't. They must be making them in Pattaya; if not they do in Rayong and Ban Phe. Good luck. Shouldn't be hard to find.
poanoi Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) Well in what city do you live ? there was a side-car builder on south pattaya rd perhaps 200 meters before 3rd rd coming from sukumvit, on the left hand right at pattaya tai. Also, since its illegal, guess all the food carts, ice cream carts, fruit carts etc will be off the streets from tomorrow then, looks like 5-10 percent of the population are making their livelihood off these sidecars, so you might be eligible for Thailands upcoming social welfare program for the part of the population that wont be able to make a living when sidecars are banned from the streets Edited September 12, 2013 by poanoi

Shurup Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Even if Thais use sidecars illegally, I bet you're the one who will be stopped and fined for it, because you're falang. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app 1
VocalNeal Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Assuming they are illegal which i don't believe they are, how come Nestle, Walls etc use them to sell ice cream? Here's one with a license plate. another? How come Tiger sells these? Sometimes I wonder if you guys think everything in Thailand is illegal. It used to be trailers for transporting bikes now they are common and used to carry small boats and jet skis you have all switched to side-cars? Sure I wouldn't want to see them everywhere either clogging up small roads but...
Hog Head Posted September 13, 2013 Author Posted September 13, 2013 Legal or not, I am going to have one I am in Chiangmai and per the OP am after a traditional style, not a food cart welded box with the death shimmies In any case I now have a much better handle on the engineering involved to make a leaner style car, whereby the bike leans and the car remains level. I am thinking to go this route rather than a rigid hack due to the more traditional solo bike handling. What is needed now is the tub. Anyone seen a traditional style tub for sale?
guzzi850m2 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 (edited) It IS illegal to mount a sidecar on your bike, you can get fined by the police anytime they want. All the food vendor sidecar bikes we see are also illegal but not very likely that anything will ever be done to try enforce the law regarding this, we all know they got much better things to do than harass a poor street vendor that earns money legally. I owned a Tiger Retro w/sidecar and the sidecar was in the green book, thus legal, you can't get a aftermarket sidecar in the green book, thus illegal. I see many expats here in Pattaya riding with sidecars, handy for shopping, some with sun roof and all. Edited September 13, 2013 by guzzi850m2

So if the bike is originally registered with a side-car it is legal? Like food vendors, Walls, Nestle..So side cars are legal. What you are saying that it is illegal to add a side car to a bike without taking it to Land Transport Dept. and getting it registered as a combo? PM sent about my friend in Chiang Mai. He has a side car complete with the leading link suspension etc..He imported the side car and an ex sidecar racer in Phuket fitted it. Yes and it have to be improved too by the right authorities. The Tiger Retro is only side car rig that is legal in Thailand (to my knowledge). All the others are fitted after the bike is bought and are therefore not legal. Even if you paint you bike or car (say from white to black), you will have to go to the land transportation office and have the color changed in the green or blue reg. book.
VocalNeal Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 ^ Only a motorcyclist knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window. In a car you are isolated from everything. You'll never see a motorbike parked outside a psychiatrist's office and so on and so forth. That you ask suggests you don't understand.

Shurup Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Well I personally love riding and I know how the dog stuck out the window feels but I would myself opt for a car instead of a bike or a scooter with a sidecar, would get a convertable too if I wanted to feel like a dog... riding a bike and riding a bike/scooter with a sidecar isn't the same thing. Hog Head Posted September 14, 2013 Author Posted September 14, 2013 I am thinking of a leaner style sidecar whereby the bike leans just like a solo bike and the car remains steady. The idea has been around for a hundred years and I now have a good handle on the engineering involved to build one. Sort of the best of both worlds, and if I do not like it it is a simple matter to disconnect the 2 heim joints and ride the bike solo. Looks like I will now be building the rolling chassis myself, but will get the tub made as that is beyond my capabilities. I have never owned a sidecar in spite of road riding for 43 years. Time to give it a go and experience the dark side of riding. The added width of a leaner over a rigid hack will regulate me to the car lanes in traffic and that will become tiresome in a hurry so this will be a road trip with the boys ride when the chair is attached Hope the dog likes it, as I think sitting the chair would scare the crap out of me, never mind Mrs Hoghead

Hog Head Posted September 15, 2013 Author Posted September 15, 2013 Looking for a suitable tug for this project. A naked BMW Boxer oilhead would be first choice but my mind is open
poanoi Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 (edited) I had a sidecar an age ago. If i were to buy another one, priorities would be a big mag wheel and a bigger sidecar, both in wide and length, and it would also have a folding ramp at the rear, i want the ability to push up another bike on it if need be.
