UPDATE Former MP charged over fatal Nonthaburi shooting Picture courtesy of BBC Former Nonthaburi MP Chalong Riewrang has been charged after allegedly shooting dead the head of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) at his office on Monday. Thongchai Yenprasert, a retired police colonel and PAO president, later died in hospital. His driver was shot in the arm and hand and was seriously injured. The former MP, was arrested after the shooting. Police say he has confessed to carrying out the attack with a 9mm handgun. Call to YouTube host during livestream Before his arrest, Chalong reportedly phoned political commentator Anchalee Paireerak while she was broadcasting live on YouTube. Viewers could not hear the caller, but Anchalee was filmed reacting with alarm after answering the phone midway through her programme. "Did he die? Did he die? You shot him in the head? You need to wait there for the cops," she said "Don't go anywhere." Dispute over alleged 11 million baht debt Pol Col Chokchai Khanajaroen, deputy commander of Nonthaburi Provincial Police, said investigators were told the attack followed a financial dispute involving around 11 million baht allegedly owed by Thongchai. Police said Chalong reportedly lost his temper over the alleged debt. Chalong was allowed to hold a press conference at a police-station after his arrest. Chalong smoked a cigarette while attempting to explain his account. He said Thongchai had been "angry" with him, without setting out the reason, and described the victim as a "good friend". Chalong said he had asked Thongchai to talk, but claimed Thongchai pushed him away, saying: "I don't want to talk, I don't want to talk." He said he followed Thongchai towards his car and pulled out the gun, insisting he had not intended to shoot him. "But then [Thongchai's driver] pulled his gun out and pointed it at me, so I fired," Chalong told reporters. Charges filed Police have charged Chalong with premeditated murder, premeditated attempted murder, and carrying a firearm in a public place without lawful justification. The investigation is continuing while officers collect evidence.
