Jooss Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Before I go to Toyota, I would ask you if someone knows about the strange behaviour of my car. This is a Fortuner 4WD D4D 3.0, with 82000km. When I let the steering wheel free, my car goes to the left, when I drive forward, and to the right, when I move back. At any speed, and without braking. Any clue ? Thx all
transam Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Tracking out perhaps. Are the tyres scuffed on the edges ?
Jooss Posted September 17, 2013 Author Posted September 17, 2013 No, the tyres are in good condition. Someone told me the reason is the alignment ? This problem began when Toyota changed my brake pads recently. Immediately when I've gone out of the garage (not in Pattaya). Could they put out the alignment removing the old pads ?
transam Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 No, alignment is tracking. They might have done tracking for you but their apparatus is out, set up wrong. Take it to another shop and get it re-checked.

transam Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Forgot . When the pads were changed, they must force the caliper pistons back into the caliper. A piston may be sticking and not moving back after brake pedal release causing it to still grip the disc.
Morden Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Must be tracking. On the other hand, it's useful to be able to tell people that you do have a ghost around. My sister-in-law won't go upstairs in our house because she believes that there are ghosts up there. I told her that we had them downstairs too. 1
ignis Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 R U sure the Tyre pressure is correct same in both sides.? 2nd question if happened only after new brake pads were fitted is one side binding [or pistons in the calipers maybe not going back freely?]
mogandave Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 If it happend during a service, why not just take it back and tell them? How long has it been? 1
Woodsie888 Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Definitely sounds like two Ghost's to me. One facing the front and one facing the rear. The resale won't be too hot now though.
Jerry Cornelius Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I would opt for incorrect wheel alignment (as said already) or play in a steering related ball joint if there is a change in steered direction when going forwards and backwards.. Mentioning that work had been done on the brakes made me think that one caliper could be binding on the disc. However, the car would always steer in the same direction when moving forwards or backwards if this were the case. (think of steering a tank). Try another venue and check alignments again. Ask them to check for play in the ball joints also. If that doesn't identify the problem, visit an excorcist. Jerry
Jooss Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 I've found my exorcist... in B-Quick Pattaya Tai ! He checked aligment, and other ball joints, then tyres. The tyre on the right was hardly deformed from inside. I changed it, and my car rolls now perfectly straight ! Really great ! Thx everyone for your kind advices. Jooss
