..They do give a Novice Driver a sense of false security. The Handling of any SUV is below a Car...Gravity Rulesthumbsup.gif . . Plus many Ferangs get browbeaten into buying them, when a Swift type Car is all they really need.w00t.gif

It's funny you should say that. What I first got here I bought a Ranger Wildtrak and was thinking to upgrade to a Pajero Sport. Then the Swift came out and thought it might be good for the wife. The test drive was a revelation.....I didn't realise how much I missed driving a car. Wildtrak was sold, I forgot about the Pajero and 'stole' Mrs mjj's Suzuki!!

I've read there is a turbo kit for around 50-70k for it that boost the power to around 140hp. Sounds fun to me, but for some reason Mrs mjj's is not too keen..........................unless we buy another Suzuki for her.

Having broken free, sounds like you are well back on the road to being "browbeaten". wink.png

The Bargirl and Wannabes Choise, suffers from the Bad Drivers and is still a 1. 5 Mill Vigo, not a patch on the Honda CRV,thats not a truck with Chairs and Shed bolted on to it. Been there hate Em.

Very true and I've owned both the CRV and the Vigo, Vigo/Fortuner doesn't begin to compare to CRV.

Yup. Crv beats fortuner every time. If only Honda had a diesel.
I had the top spec CRV diesel model in France, bought it when the new one came out in 2005. I liked it... but it's one of those cars that doesn't really know what it wants to be. A bit cramped for space, and not exactly spectacular to drive. Hired a bottom of range CRV in Chiang Mai once, thought it was very poor to drive, even a bit sluggish. Have preferred to drive the Pajero or MU-7 each time I've done long trips in Thailand. Don't see the point in throwing yourself around the bends here, when there's a cartload of durian trying to overtake a truck heading your way just around the corner.

The 2.0 crv is a little gutless in hills. The fortuner is a roll over candidate, I have absolutely no doubt.

<deleted> are you two talking about...comparing a car based SUV with a truck based one! Different size classes as well.
And you ask the market whether it distinguishes the two in price, prestige and marketing.

The fortuner isn't even the best pick up based SUV. Not even close. It drives like a boat.

'.... a little gutless' is a gross mis(under)statement at the very least! I was driving along in new 2.0 CRV rental when, while ascending a steep hill, the car literally stopped going forward a ways from the top! At that moment, I thought the engine had stopped and was afraid of rolling backwards!

That was one scary moment!

Lesson: If you like to travel the roads of LOS be adequately equipped for all road conditions.

Jeez ....SUVs are different from cars in the way yachts are different from speedboats! They are intended for totally different genres.

If converting a Truck to a 1.5Mill Bitzer makes Toyo a whopping Profit , why haven't Nissan done the same with their Trucks i wonder. ?.... Don't blame the vehicle when the real cause is due to the 'Not-up-to-speed (pun intended) in Drivers Education skills' drivers that permeate this society yet get behind the wheels of motor vehicles - thus your weekly 'Roll' and the myriad of other frequent vehicle mishaps.

Yep, it's usually, not always, but usually whats between a drivers ears that causes a problem on any road.

In my handbook for the Vigo they tell you about the high centre of gravity of the 4x4 and to be careful if on a steep camber (words to that effect).

Virtually all vehicles on the road have their own characteristics which one must become accustom too.

The absolute number of Fortuners on the Thai roads is rather big so chances are that if folks are speeding / tailgating, they're driving a Fortuner.. I think another factor is the torquey diesel engine that pulls from low-revs, so when accelerating behind some 1.6 or 1.8 gasoline powered cars it sometimes feels they're holding you up. Personally I experience this with Captiva CRDI drivers who always seems to tailgate but for them it might seem normal and I'm the one who's driving slow..

Nissan have, it's called the Pathfinder, and is/was based on the Navara platform - they even plonked a Renault 240HP/550Nm 3.0L V6 turbo diesel in the thing.. they just never assembled it in TH, so as a result was sold everywhere but here.

The new Pathfinder (coming late this year) is now a monocoque chassis CR-V competitor though..

I would even consider 'upgrading' from my Isuzu 3.0L with this engine if I could also couple it with a Pajero 4WD drive train! thumbsup.giflaugh.png

If it's power you're after, Chev are launching updated versions of the Duramax engines in the TB/Colorado in November that up their power to 200HP/500Nm for the 2.8L and 163HP/380Nm for the 2.5L.....

Apart from the new engine how does the chev compare with its competition? For me comfort and handling should be good. The power will be there with the new engine too.

I bought new the top spec 4WD Turbo diesel fortuna sport 2013. Very happy with it. It has enough power to overtake the trucks safely going up hill on the mountain road. The suspension is firm compared to older models; not roling on the corners at all if your not driving like an idiot. Its nice and roomy, comfortable, sat nav works well, plenty of space for all family or put back seat up (they tuck up in to the windows) for a decent space to carry furniture or boxes, even with all seats own in place the weekly shop fits in behind the back row.

Parjero was not so roomy and not so firm suspension when test drive. Bulbous look I don't about it either.

The Chevy looks nice but the lack of dealer/ garage network decided me against it. This is one thing that really sold the yoyo to to me- going on road trips and up to remote areas; mechanics are used to dealing with Toyota and parts are plentiful; while Chevy I could imajine getting stuck waiting on delivery from the urban centres.

The resale value of Toyota was another factor. Can sell after 4-5 years and buy new having not lost too much money at all compared to other brands or aged cars.

Also the fuel efficiency seems great.

^ one thing I really hate about my car is the obnoxious beep/ horn nice it makes if you press the remote locking and the door isn't 100% shut. They should have made a polite ding dong like a door bell or something

Regards the CRV or Merc or Benz SUVs I'd say they lack space and practicality; basically just for posers

Or perhaps their safety features take up space. smile.png

^ maybe I'm just joking and throwing silly generalisations around like the comments on fortuna drivers

But the cars do lack space- however I'm sure they suit some people just fine.

The CRV 2.2 i-CDTi EX I bought in 2005 fitted the bill perfectly. I was living in the French Alps each winter. 4WD kicked in with the slightest wheel spin, good roadholding, you could chuck it around the mountain bends so long as the snow tyres were in good nick, enough room for all the ski gear. All in all a nice small SUV that was well suited to the conditions, with plenty of power even when fully loaded. I wouldn't have swapped it for a Fortuner or Pajero, that's for sure.

But Thailand is another thing entirely. And that's why I opted for the Pajero Sport 2.5 GT 4WD yesterday.

Thats cool, if we all thought the same we would all buy the same ride. thumbsup.gif

No point slinging cars around here, unless you want to kill someone. Their driving is too 'unpredictable'. Their spacial awareness and road sense is nonexistent at times. Just too dangerous to drive to the limit here.

Took the rear seat's out of my Sportivo the first week I had it only two 12m bolts to undo now have a very large estate.

Re the resell the service manager in my local Toyota's keep's asking me to sell it to him so far he's up to 950,000bt and it's nearly 5 year's old must admit though it does look like new + I service it every 5,000km. Just wondering how much you would get for a 5 year old Pajero.

At least there is one Rich Member , do You realise those 2 Seats held in by 2 Bolts cost 150 K Bht each.biggrin.pngcoffee1.gif

For your information the two bolt's are on the pivot side, the rest of the seat has strong releasing clamp's to enable them to fold to the side.

Isn't it also about time you stopped making stupid childish remark's/post's about thing's you know nothing about.

So if the 2008 Pajero is in top condition it has depreciated 350K from 1.25M, while your 1.3M 'as new' Fortuner has depreciated 350K too? Hardly a significant difference if those figures are accurate.

I posted a couple of years ago about a guy in my Village that bought a new top model Toyota Fortuner and never uses it, still the same today so the Toyota Fortuner is now about 7 years old, and not yet done 10.000 KM.. he bought it because his old 123 model 300D Benz was on it's last legs and must have a car to do the 100 KM round trip to work 6 days a week..

The Benz has been round the clock many time and just keeps on going with no problems, he likes driving it, just one day it will give up and he will be forced to drive the Toyota Fortuner..
