BALI, Oct 9 - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra reaffirmed to the gathered Asia Pacific leadership that her government's investment in Bt350 billion of water management projects will successfully handle all kinds of water-related crises.

The Thai premier made her remarks during the working luncheon among the leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organisation on the topic “Sustainable Growth with Equity: Food, Water, and Energy Security.”

She said that APEC is heading in the right direction as food and water security will lead to sustainable economic development.

Ms Yingluck said Thailand's challenges involve both extremes of flooding and drought, but they have changed crises into opportunities by using water for industry, agriculture and food processing.

She urged wider use of efficient collective water management systems in the region to help promote food security.

The Thai premier noted that her government's mega water management project is the beginning of Thailand's potential to handle all kinds of water-related crises and that the kingdom is willing to share its experience with APEC economies.

Ms Yingluck left Bali this afternoon for Brunei's capital of Bandar Seri Begawan to attend the 23rd ASEAN Summit until Thursday.

There, she is scheduled to join ASEAN leaders in attending meetings with key Dialogue Partners, i.e. China, Japan, Korea, India, and the United States, as well as the ASEAN+3 Summit and the East Asia Summit (EAS). These meetings will be held under Brunei’s chairmanship for the last time before Myanmar assumes the role in 2014. (MCOT online news)

Och behave......there was a chronic mismanagement of flood control prior to the Great Flood, every government of every colour was to blame. Thailand is on a flood plain.......and it will take years for the country to undo the mistakes of previous governments.

There was no way it would be fixed in two years, and it will never be fully solved. Even in advanced Europe rivers flood, get over it.

I hope that people and their homes and business can be protected from such devastation.

But what I would really like to see is public information for each project - big and small - covering the bidding process, tech. specs, quality issues, environment impact studies and - of course - budget with all associated accounts and transactions.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct 9 – Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will encourage Southeast Asian countries to cooperate for food stability and effective water management in the region as the 23th ASEAN Summit kicks off here today.

She talked to reporters on her arrival from Bali at Brunei’s capital to attend the two-day summit on the theme “Our People, Our Future Together” and other meetings.

Ms Yingluck said Thailand looked forward to regional cooperation on water management to fight against floods and create sustainable use of water for agricultural purpose which would help develop food quality and stability.

Regarding regional connectivity, she said leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would discuss land, sea and air transport connections in the region, as well as rules and regulations to be jointly enforced among ASEAN members, such as borders, checkpoints and information technology connections.

She said territorial disputes in the South China Sea would be raised in the meeting as Thailand has acted as coordinator between ASEAN countries and China.

ASEAN leaders and their counterparts from China, South Korea, Japan, India and the United States will dialogue on a range of topics particularly trade and economic cooperation. (MCOT online news)

Excuse the pun, but she really is way out of her depth now, and treading water.

YS, bit of advice, doggy paddle to the side of the pool, dry yourself off, and go shopping (in silence) the effective benefit to the country will be about the same.

Is this setting the stage for another 350 billion ?

Perhaps she was just warming up the audience for the main event..,bit of levity

This woman has mega projects on the brain.

I bet she didn't tell APEC that all the great promises of 2011 didn't happen as the money borrowed to fund the projects somehow got ' mislaid '.

I'm sure in the future the government will ' have to ' borrow more to start all these mega schemes and am sure too that the new funding will also mysteriously disappear.

Your right but almost nothing has been done plans stalled because the government failed to do impact studies and keep the projects transparent. Its mismanagement.

I can give plenty of examples... they are building a sluice here.. been stalled because the money was gone (corruption). Nobody did a thing for months.

Thing is because of the massive graft in this government things dont work.

Got to agree Rob. All the promises and actions from 2011 - few if any delivered. Corruption, lethargy and simply inept. What's worse, we get a repeat of the same rhetoric - don't worry, it's under control, all gone in 7 days, the Bt 350 million projects will sort it all out etc etc. Reality is Bt 120 million allocated for emergency work in response to the 2011 mega flood seems to have vanished with little visible results, And the leading politicians still spout the same nonsense - and get away with it. KY now seems to think she can do the same internationally as at home. Tell them anything - they'll believe it. Incredible arrogance and contempt.

Blether is right in that this a product of chronic mismanagement over many governments. But, credit due, this government are mismanaging better!

PM: Thailand can handle water crisis with mega management projects

Alas, what a disappointment! I thought Yingluck and his cabinet had come with a new spin for the high speed trains to be used to carry water from flood areas into the sea.

Ms Yingluck said Thailand looked forward to regional cooperation on water management to fight against floods and create sustainable use of water for agricultural purpose which would help develop food quality and stability.

Water management and food stability? As in wasting enormous quantities of water to grow rice that can't be sold and rots away?
What a joke of a PM.

Does she know that those other countries can Google.. "Flooding in Thailand"

If she does, then she should prepare for questions like... "where did the money go... and if we co-operate with Thailand, will you make our money vanish too"

Holy Crap if those other countries ever read TV articles.... Thailand would definitely have some explaining to do...

Now is the best time for graft in their eyes, as her position will draw closer to an end- rob all you can to secure your dynasty, whether living abroad or buying up football teams with peoples' money.

"PM stresses food stability"

Right... So is she stressing stable floods? You know, floods that are bit more consistent and never varying in depth, frequency, intensity, location or length of duration? Does it mean that the same people and only those people will be flooded every year? Or does it mean that there is now a "War on the Horses". xdry.png.pagespeed.ic.Kc5N3hfS-T.webp
