Floods severely batter historic Ayutthaya, former capital

AYUTTHAYA, Oct 15 - More than 50,000 homes, 100,000 rai (40,000 acres) of rice fields, industrial estates and historical sites in Thailand's old capital, 80 km north of Bangkok, have been damaged by recent floods, according to governor Witthaya Pewpong.

He said the Chao Phraya and three other rivers which run through the province from the North -- the Noi, the Pasak and the Lop Buri - have overflowed.

Floods have affected nearly 170,000 people in 11 districts, 122 sub-districts and 786 villages, he said, predicting that flood waters should completely recede later this month.

He said Ayutthaya historical park, the old city island, ancient buildings, industrial estates and business zones have been inundated.

More than 100,000 rai of rice fields in Bang Ban, Sena, Pak Hai and Maharaj districts had been under water which was diverted from nearby areas but farmers had the good fortune to have finished harvesting their second crop, he said. (MCOT online news)

As soon as the PTP top brass and the other MPs DEMs finish reading your post they will certainly become more aware that they (or nobody before them) knew or gave a hoot about solving this yearly preventable natural event.

Well on the upside, ruined crops mean less money going out in rice-subsidies next harvest and they can release more emergency funds for the flood relief that never quite manages to make its way into the hands of people that need it.

On the downside, the pledging scheme continues to make Thai rice non-competitive so the people they are supposedly soooo concerned about will keep watching their market tumble and coupled with the flooding they not only lose their liveliehoods but their homes and have to deal with the potential health hazards and overall inconvenience of living in Atlantis.

2011 they told upcountry, that the Democrats caused the floods as revenge for not being elected. This time it will be a bit harder to explain.

I've an idea... Move the capital back to AYUTTHAYA and see how long politicians can tread water.
