Protesters clean up their site after unidentified assailants threw ma mui- an itchy plant- into their sleeping tents early yesterday.

BANGKOK: -- POLICE YESTERDAY tried in vain to convince protesters who have camped out at the Urupong Intersection for days to move to the National Stadium on Rama I Road.

The relocation will ease road snarls and police can assure protesters improved safety for them," Metropolitan Police spokesman Maj-General Adul Narongsak said.

Police had reopened 14 closed roads after assessing a reduced threat from the demonstrators, he said.

Rally leader Nitithorn Lamlua said police had neglected their duty to ensure peace as some people had thrown ma mui (itchy plants) into the tent where the protesters were sleeping in the early hours.

Nitithorn called for the crowds to surge to 10,000 to show retaliation against poor police performance and to demand the removal of Metropolitan Police commissioner, Lt-General Camronwit Toopgrajank.

Leaders were drafting a petition for a probe into suspected foul play related to the prosecutors' dropping of a terrorism charge against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, he said.

The Student Federation of Thailand and the Ramkhamhaeng University Student Council issued a statement condemning the citing of the university's name as a supporter of the Urupong rally.

Some Ramkhamhaeng students defected from the People's Army to Overthrow the Thaksin Regime and organised a rally under the banner of the Students and People's Network for Thailand Reform.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has instructed police to submit a security assessment by tomorrow before deciding whether to lift the Internal Security Act, one of her aides said.

The Cabinet resolved to keep the October 18 date for the end of the ISA, pending a review of the latest situation, Paradorn Pattanatabut, secretary-general of the National Security Council, said.

Security measures were necessary to prevent the protests from spiralling out of control, he said.

Organisers of the rally led by the People's Army against the Thaksin Regime at Lumpini Park decided to name Preecha Iamsuphan as spokesman to replace former spokesman Thaikorn Polsuwan.

Urupong protesters to reinforce demonstration
By English News

BANGKOK, Oct 16 – Anti-government protesters at Urupong intersection will officially call on Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to transfer the metropolitan police commander for his inefficiency in providing safety to demonstrators.

Uthai Yodmanee and Nitithorn Lamlua, leaders of the Network of Students and People for Thailand Reform (NSPTR), said metropolitan police failed to keep their promise to ensure security for demonstrators at Urupong intersection.

Several protesters were rushed to a hospital after a poison ivy-like plant was scattered into the rally site Monday night, Mr Uthai said.

He said the protesters would march to Siam Square and adjacent areas to urge students and the wider public to join the demonstration
.
“If the number of demonstrators reaches at least 10,000 people, we will submit a letter to the prime minister, calling for a transfer of Metropolitan Police Commander Kamronwit Thoopkrachang,” he said.

He said the group would set Sunday as the deadline for the prime minister’s response and further social action would be taken if no reply was given.

Mr Uthai rejected an allegation that the demonstration at Urupong has created inconveniences to the public, insisting that traffic could flow and roads were not closed as claimed by the Centre for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO).

He said he was legally elected as leader of the Ramkhamhaeng University Students Administrative Organisation and authorised to organise the rally.

The Students Federation of Thailand earlier attacked the NSPTR for organising the demonstration. (MCOT online news)

I agree pretty poor showing the the 30 police assigned to protect the protestors from the dreaded third hand.

The rabble of pensioners, the unemployed and those who chose not to work are not legitimate protesters. Since they issue objections and even at times instructions to their government they are in fact anarchists seeking to damage Thailand in anyway they can.

Thailand does not seem to have any Law for the rational control of protest groups. It would be advisable to devise restrictions on demonstrations that require protesters to obtain a permit from the Commissioner of Police granting them permission to protest from a specific site. If protesters do not comply with their permit to protest they should be sent home on pain of a hefty fine or be sentenced to public service while wearing a leg band to control their movements.

If any the people protesting were paid a cash incentive to disturb the peace the organizer of the protest should be imprisoned for conspiracy.

So we can take from this comment you are basically against free speech unless of course you come from a privileged minority, rich , young healthy and hold politically correct views?

You look down on the old, the unemployed and they of course have no right to protest or actually exist. in your view. Indeed you are a charming creature a legend no doubt in your own little world of perfection

I and I am sure many others here are able to recall someone else who had similar views to yours in the 1930's in Europe and as a result of those views many people were exterminated due to their political stance, their mental and physical disabilities their religious views and ethnic backgrounds etc etc. Nations also became embroiled in wars to destroy that which you idolize as the requirements to actually exist as a human being.

Being as you seem to despise the human race why are you still with us?

I would have though euthanasia would have been the ideal avenue for you to take or are you waiting in the wings to witness another massacre of innocents so as to purge your little word of the undesirables you are forced to share it with?

If any the people protesting were paid a cash incentive to disturb the peace the organizer of the protest should be imprisoned for conspiracy.

This measure of course would in fact and must also apply in a retrospective action regarding your idol the puppet master Thaksin and his sponsorship of the Red Shirts concerning their delightful actions a while back.

Again.

Does your posting name indicate that you do not actually live in Thailand but may well be a resident of The U.K. hence your profound ignorance as to the rampant manipulation of this puppet government by its puppet master along with its ongoing campaign to destroy democracy too?

I hardly think it represents the fact that you read The Independent newspaper from the U.K.?

i must say you are the finest example of a bigoted snob it has even been my misfortune to encounter in my whole life.

Pensioners, unemployed & those who choose not to work are not legitimate protestors? Very good Benito.

So where was your condemnation of the so-called rabble in 2010? Your last sentence is the only sensible bit of your post. Unfortunately the 2010 paymaster wasn't in the country which lets him off according to the DPP.

It's the heavy handed response to the initial protest group that has attracted larger groups who are not so easily cowed by PTP & BIB threats. You reap what you sow.

Indeed! It's time for the government to start leading the country with a strong hand and stop worrying about silly things like civil rights or freedom of speech. facepalm.gif

After all, didn't the de facto PM once say, "Democracy is not my goal".

UPDATE
Police asks protesters to clear Urupong Intersection

BANGKOK: -- Police Wednesday renewed efforts to have a group of protesters leave the Urupong Intersection and return to the Lumpini Park, saying local residents have filed complaints against them.

Pol Maj Gen Adul Narongsak, deputy commissioners of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said residents of the Prajaechin Market Community had filed complaints at the Phrayathai police station against the Students and People Network for Thailand Reform.

Adul said the local residents complained that the demonstrations at the intersection on the outbound Rama VI Road, which continued since last Thursday, prevented them from entering their home.

Moreover, mobile toilets were set up in front of their houses and causing foul smell and the wasted water also flew into the houses and shops, turning away prospect customers.

The local residents also complained that the use of public addressing system, speeches and music on the stage caused them to be unable to sleep at night and the rally also prevented their prospect customers from reaching the market.

Wow I wish this is all it took to disperse the protestors in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Good to see that you don't support the red shirts 2010 protests at Ratchaprasong.

This is the PT government's chance to prove they can do better at dealing with mass protest than the preceding regime.

They've already proven they aren't, especially when considering they aren't facing protesters with war weapons.
