BANGKOK: -- As if the unyielding downpour wasn’t enough, an envious water pipe decided to get in on the action and ruin many morning commutes.

Streets in Bangkok's Ratchathewi district were flooded when a water main was accidentally cracked open by construction work near the Rachaprarop airport link rail station, snarling already miserable traffic.

During an excavation to install electrical conduit under the ground, workers accidentally broke the water pipe near, releasing a large amount of water onto the ground. [read more...]

Apparently they were wrong, and the nasty nasty leaking pipe will be blamed along with its low wage workers who take the blame on their superiors' behalf

Water is coming from all directions today. Oh dear.

They are just trying out this excuse for when it really does flood.

Must be the biggest pipe in history.

Something (Guess it must be this) paralysed Expressway 1st & 2nd stages this morning. Namwongwan to Suvarnabhumi and back took me 5 hours!

Flooded roads, several accidents and Easypass not working properly again.

My advice: Stay home.

It never rains...

If that's a leak I would hate to see a pipe that broke!

The BMA drainage office urged the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority to repair the pipe and dispatched officials to drain water via Bueng Makkasan and to warn pedestrians away from the open drainage holes.

Ratchathewi district director Laksana Rojthamrong said the Metropolitan Electricity Authority was drilling in the area as it prepared to lay electric wires underground when the accident happened. At press time, officials had managed to stop the water but were advising motorists to avoid the area and recommending that residents move their belongings to higher ground.

Methinks that porkies are possibly being told here. That amount of water from a simple burst pipe? I don't think so!

Good story though - I'm sure the majority of the sheeple will now believe that the flooding in Bangkok was not a result of the heavy rains [and lack of prevention] but because a pipe burst. All the politicians can breathe easy again - was nothing to do with them

And what diameter was the pipe that burst? 10 mtrs?

In my area they put in pipes that were huge.

Can't remember them clearly but it was somewhere in the 2-4 meter area.

Made of concrete segments.

Just look for the wet spot...

My client did a seismic survey over the west side of Bangkok a few years ago. One 'check box' on the list was getting the MWA onboard with information on pipe locations. A coupe of MWA officials came and looked at what we planned on doing over the next three months and said they would come back and give us a map.

It's coming up 3 years since we completed the survey and we are still waiting.

Looking for a wet spot is just about right... but a bit of a bugger in the rainy/floody season.

Cable-laying mishap disrupts tap-water supply

BANGKOK: -- Residents living along Bangkok's Ratchaprarop Rd and nearby areas were without tap water yesterday, after a backhoe damaged a section of pipe near the Makkasan intersection, causing the pipe to burst.

With the road, which houses many commercial buildings, under 30 centimetres of water, traffic backed up severely during the morning rush hour. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's drainage office urged the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority to repair the pipe, and dispatched officials to drain the water via Bueng Makkasan and to warn pedestrians away from drainage channels that had been opened up.

Ratchathewi district director Laksana Rojthamrong said the Metropolitan Electricity Authority was drilling in the area in preparation for laying underground electricity cables when the accident happened. At press time, officials had managed to stop the leak, and were repairing the tap-water pipe and advising motorists to avoid the area. Repairs to the pipe were expected to be complete later in the evening.

The incident caused a suspension of tap-water service in the following areas: Rajadamri Road from Ploenchit intersection to the Saen Saeb Canal; Chid Lom Road from Ploenchit to Saen Saeb Canal; Wireless Road from Ploenchit Intersection to the Saen Saeb Canal; Ratchaprarop Road from the Din Daeng junction to the Ploenchit intersection; both sides of Ratchatapan Road; Phetchaburi Road from Soi Phetchaburi 15-21; and from the Ratchathewi intersection to Pratunam Intersection.
