It's not where you are going in Thailand, but how long do you plan to stay. I would apply for a Tourist Visa, you would be stamped permitted to stay 60 days, an can extend that for 30 days for 1900 Baht without leaving the country. If not enough time, apply for a double entry, would just have to exit and re-enter to start the second visa entry.

so for my first visa i would get 90 days in total with the extension.

then i would leave ..... ( where would be a good cheap place to leave to ? )

then just repeat the same thing again with my 2nd entry ? depending on weather i came in by air i would get 30 days but by land i would get 15 ? am i correct so far ?

Correct, you would get about 90 days, if you have a double entry Tourist Visa, you would have to depart and make the second entry while it is still valid, you would then start another 60 day + 30 day stay. Companies do border runs from Bangkok to the Cambodian border for about 2000 Baht.

The 30 day entry by air, and 15 days by land are visa exempt entries.

Depends on how long you want to stay.

If you get a triple entry tourist visa just prior to your departure, you can get almost 270 days in Thailand with two border runs (just go across any border and come back in) and three 30 days extensions that you get at immigration in Thailand - cost 1900 baht each. To get the maximum time, the trick is to get the visa just before your departure as it should be valid for six months and the last entry must be used on/before the "must enter by" date on the visa.

A double entry will give you 180 days. one border run + two extensions.

A single will give you 90 days. one extension.

A visa exempt entry will only give you 30 days and you most likely will have to have an onward ticket deperting Thailand during the 30 days for the Airline to let you board the flight to Thailand.

You do not qualify for any other type of visa.

so as soon as the visa comes through my letter box ( i dont know how it arrives0 it will be active ?

isnt that quite risky before im just about to leave to applying for it ? isnt the process quite long ?

Telephone /email one of the Hon Thai Consulates in the UK and ask about the turnround time !

You should be able to obtain a tourist visa by post within 7-10 days if not sooner.

Even easier if you wish to travel. Apply and receive the visa on the same day.

Edit

Your itinerary seems somewhat ambitious.

Suggest you invest in a Rough Guide or Lonely Planet Thai guide book.
