BANGKOK: -- SHIPS AND PLANES were warned yesterday to stay away from the Phang Nga coast on Tuesday of next week as India will launch a rocket that might jettison a fuel tank into the area.

"India's space centre told us that the launch would possibly be on November 5, because the weather on that day is expected to be suitable for the mission," said Anond Snidvongs, executive director of the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda).

The Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, near Chennai, alerted Gistda that its Mars orbiter spacecraft would tentatively lift off between October 21 and November 20. The C25 Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle would release five huge fuel cylinders after they were spent and all of them would fall into the ocean.

"Our calculations indicate that the fifth tank could possibly land in the Andaman Sea, about 360 kilometres off Phang Nga province. However it would burn up and its size would be much smaller," he added.

The risk that it would hit land is very minor, he added.

Aviation and maritime regulatory agencies are usually informed of space missions, so he was not worried about international aircraft and vessels.

"What concerns me is that Thai craft could possibly wander into the area during the period," he said.

"Gistda wishes to provide the public with facts and information about the launch to prevent any possible misunderstanding and misinformation that could lead to panic," he said.

If successful, the mission will make India the fourth space power to have explored the Red Planet after Russia, the United States and Europe.

Maybe the priorities are mixed up.. but its a fact that research like this will help India ahead. They are already a great country IT wise. I got many clients who use their services. So in a way its just an investment and i support it.

As for the International aid from the UK that is just compensation for all the stuff they robbed in the past, the Dutch have compensated their colonies too.

....do any fishing boats venture 360 km out......doubtful....

Why not? Certainly in Vietnam they go out hundreds of kilometers.

I agree. Common goal or common enemy is a great boost for nation to go forward.

US did this long time ago, the space race advanced science and technology. China has been doing this for an while, so have Japan.

So we can expect Germany and the Japanese to compensate the West for all the expenses incurred in defeating their evil dictatorships in WW2 and then in rebuilding their countries for them and policing them for many years thereafter ?

And those naught Romans caused so much damage, hope Italy has a deep pocket.

Ridiculous - the PC idea that European countries need to pay money as some kind of guilt complex. India has massive corruption issues, perpetuates a feudal class based systems, is rife with religious bigotry and sexism, and has delusions on being a world power whilst ignoring poverty at home. Spending on rockets - good idea,

As far as I know both Germany and Japan have paid

Anyway I am not saying it is right or wrong but the UK has profiteerd from India and now is giving back a bit. That they have corruption too bad.. I still stand with my view that this is good for the country it will help development. Then they can use that money that comes from these kind of projects to combat poverty.

I see this as education and investment. Anyway feel free to have your own view I will just agree to disagree.

A curious note about Indian technology. Russia stole the nuclear bomb plans from the Americans. The Chinese stole it from the Russians. The Pakistanis bought it from...well, someone (that has been a longstanding an unresolved debate, though everyone feels certain their rival India did not hand anything over). However, the speculation in the intelligence community is that India developed their own device. There are many ways to skin that scary cat, and the Indians may very well have a completely unique basic design

There is some odd correspondence between Hindu mythology and nuclear physics (many of their scientists are also mythologists, interestingly enough). This correspondence was strong enough that a famous interview between Einstein and the Indian poet Tagore showed that they uinderstood each other perfectly, but reframed each other's responses into a differently pereceived construct of the Standard Atomic Model. Einstein later stated that Tagore was the only layman he had ever encountered that understood what the physicists were all arguing about at the time, Tagore was not a physicist by any means, but understood what old One Mug was saying.

Interestingly odd.

Go India. I wonder if they intend to populate other planets and take all the best sites for convenience stores and crappy tailor shops. Hopefully they'll keep the fast food outfits at bay. laugh.png
