Try airbnb.com you might find some cheap rooms there, The further away from Hong Kong island and TST the cheaper it gets.

The main expats areas are Wan chai and Soho.

it's cheap to get around, get yourself a Octopus card at the Airport.

What are you looking to pay- you can get a very, very small, private room with a bath just good for sleeping in Mongkok two blocks from subway (called hostel but all private rooms, some with ensuite bath and some with share bath) which will get allow you to get almost anywhere for about 1000-1200 baht night for a single(if not a holiday) or do you want to pay more? I stayed at this place over New Years Eve2012 and although it was 4000 baht a night--realize it was Hong Kong and prime holiday time. The bed was comfortable and it was clean. It's two blocks to the pick up point for airport bus.

Just HKD320 - HKD450 per night.. Very good place from my experience.

But the website.. usually cannot book... You can call them OR ask some local friends in hong kong to make the booking.

This is NOT a hotel.. It is just a guest house... that is Private Rooms with Bathroom inside a Big Apartment.

There are several other like this in near by buildings... good value for money.

This one I highly recommend.

We stayed at the Ibis North Point earlier this year, I cannot remember the actual price but it was very cheap for HKG.

The room was quite small but very clean and comfortable, even had a harbour view and was only a few steps away from the MRT.

Sucks to be you friend. I need to go to Hong Kong for business sometimes. I am very sad while walking to the plane to take me there. SUPER happy walking to the plane taking me back to Land of Smiles. EVERYONE smokes there. Spits, Picks their nose. Hacks. Food is not appealing. Hong Kong sucks. China sucks. Welcome back to Thailand when you realize how bad Asia sucks compared to Thailand

To me this was a no-brainer.

The most interesting place in Hong Kong was the bizarre Kowloon walled city (check wikipedia). This was a tiny patch of land with a massive population that built up because it was disputed between China and Britain. The narrow alleys had almost no light as the buildings towered into the sky. Astonishing.

But that was knocked down in the 1980s. And the nearest equivalent now (and only one block from the park that now sits in the centre of all that matters in Hong Kong and where the old walled city lay) is Chunking Mansions (check them out on Wikipedia too). They are so infamous that the BBC recently did an entire radio documentary about that one building. Download it.

Chunking Mansions is so vast that its thought you could live there without leaving the building. It is also is resident to every scum and villainly possible. It is as exciting as this sounds.

But it was recently cleared of its crime by CCTV installation and a large police presence. So you get the buzz of where it's all happening (it's thought 20% of Black Africa's mobile phones are sold through this building) without the danger.

When you choose the tonnes of hotels make sure you choose upper floor places away from the whiff of the curry houses on the 3rd floor. The rooms are extremely cheap for Hong Kong and you can book on all the famous internet travel agents. Just read the reviews.

And make sure you take a camera. Enjoy. I did.

Is Airasia the best airline to get there price wise?

Sometimes yes, sometimes not, it usually depends if they have a promotion and/or you book early enough, but watch out for their "add ons".

To HGK I've flown with AA, Thai, Emirates and even Ethiopian, to get the best prices and timings.

You will need to search all the options when you are ready to book.

Often the cheapest way is to fly into Macao by Air Asia, use the special immigration system to be escorted to the hydrofoill by the Macao police, and catch the boat to Hong Kong...

Hi I go many times, it depends on time of year with hotel pricing, they have quite a few big exhibitions each year and if you go when 1 is on the hotels are very expensive. A lot of times I stay in Macau and come over to H/K on express boat, 40mins.

Great area for shopping night market by the MTR station Jordan. Ask any one Night Market it is great buy anything and bargain with them you can get price right down, inthe market street great cheap eating places and bloody good food.

For checking your hotels out go onto google and punch in Agoda, city Hong Kong you can also check the Makau hotels they are less than half the price of H/K. Make your way down Nathan Rd till you come across Granville Rd or Cameron on the left walking towards the ferry terminals and then turn left down one of the roads and you will come to a good big shopping area with lots small shops
