Having been married to a Thai for over 40 year and being around them even longer; I have to question the results of this poll. Right now it is showing 71% - never?

In my experience the top three passtimes for Thai people are gambling, eating and sex. Those vary in importance depending on the time of day and the age of the people. But those three are always the top.

Whenever I and my wife go to a Thai Party,it's lashings of Food first, once consumed its 90% find a spare room, and out come the cards, regular as clockwork!out of our social group of 20 to 25,only 3 do not play cards. In fact I suspect their are many Husbands who do not know their wives gamble, while they are at work, they can often be seen in the UK playing the Roulette Machines in the afternoons.

most farang wont be aware if their partner is gambling because their partner will keep it a secret and lie about it also

If you consider the lottery gambling then 99% do.

To be honest I was thinking more of card schools, which I have witnessed even at funerals.

er, and you know this how?

If you consider the lottery gambling then 99% do.

They are willing to kill in order to play cards, yes !

funerals are always a good place for professional gamblers to ply their trade. no cop will dare bust them there

Never seen the mrs or any of her family gamble in ten years, she's far too tight to waste money, thank goodness. It's true about gambling allowed after funerals.

This card game that Thais play, is there is a "House" that has an advantage over other players like in a casino? Is there any skill involved or just luck?

75% say "Never".

It's not a fair poll. We've heard that wives will lie and cheat and that they are willing to kill in order to play cards.

Forget 75% claim that posters wives don't gamble. They're Thais, so must be dishonest and we've all been hoodwinked.

Look beyond being tight with money and you may recall the poverty that your wife may have described previously. My wife will walk to the next shop to save a couple of pence on a packet of soap. It comes from having no money.

So ... just how-tight-is-your-girlfriend?

Man ... she's tight!

I love every minute of it ... w00t.gif

Tight, but not cheap ... she's actually quite a generous soul.

My wife has no time for gambling. She's too busy all the time going to visit her friend Len Pai.

Doesn't drink, doesn't smoke. But became addicted to poker machines in Oz. Lost more than I dare say. Total loss included marriage. Soooooo sad.

I didn't see "chronic problem" amongst your choices.

Mate ... that's just plain sad.

May I ask, how did she access the amount of money to put through the machines?

Did she work? Or rely on your money?

Gambling is ok if the money you loose is affordable and not set aside for another cause. The same as what people spend on alcohol or cigarettes i guess.

When it comes to addiction gambling is the worse for me! You can tell if someone is drunk or has taken drugs.

The frightening thing about gambling is that you dont see the signs. 1000, 10,000, 50,000..............! You dont see the signs. Too easy to hide!

It's an endemic problem in LOS to ''try'' and get cash to improve life. No hand outs here. Unfortunately it becomes an addiction for many, my wifes family are a perfect example. I know folk who have gone to farangland and cannot kick the habit. Very sad, cos in the end many break with their husband and go home broke, angry and still gamble with borrowed family money.

If she did I would not be with her.

do you think she would tell you

Didn't gamble at all in Thailand. Lost all her money from working here in Oz over many years. Influenced by other Asians she worked with. Lost a s -hitload of my money as well. Gambled unemployment benefits. Refused help again & again. Couldn't stand it anymore or I would have gone under - lost house etc. Fantastic lady in so many ways, perfect Thai wife for many years except for chronic gambling habits. This in turn causes hundreds of arguments. But will always be the number one lady I've known in my life.

I would like to s-hit down the throat of all politicians who voted in favour of poker machines. They live their lives on a fat Govt. pension whilst the lives of thousands are ruined by poker machines in Oz.. No poker machines in Western Australia and they are flush with money to spend on the economy not fatted hotel owners.

Reading this post makes me laugh. There are so many Thai ladies I know here in Oz with chronic gambling habits. Check out our Casino - filled with Asians losing everything they earn.

At the end of the day, there's always only ever one winner with gambling, and that's the bookmaker. The thing that amazes me is how many people in the world think they can outsmart the bookmaker.Recession proof business, second only to the undertaker.

Le Roy and I agree nobody will beat a bookmaker 3 years in a row over tens years a player has to lose to a Bookie that is the odds.

May I point out that it is not only a farang losing out thing. I know many Thai folk who have lost their nest egg. sad.png

David you have spent enough time here and been around Thais long enough to already know the answer.

Let me spell it out for you, some of these mia farang never gave up their profession on marrying the white knight in shining armour and moving overseas.

Examples I know of, one woman gambled away 2 million baht, proceeds of a house sale, another gambled away not one but two restaurants, I cant be assed recounting the others.

The most galling was when one Thai wanted to use our house as a "knocking shop", she couldnt understand why the mrs told her to eff off.

Yes, you are right ... I really do live the Thai lifestyle ... no escaping it where I am ... has taught me many, many things.

But ...

I was trying to ascertain the source of her funds to gamble.

If she was spending her own money, then it would very difficult to change her behaviour as the OP doesn't control the Purse strings.

If however, she was spending say an 'allowance' she was given for her free spending money ... then the OP has direct control and could manage the financial side of gambling ... but still left with the emotional side to deal with.

My Thai brother-in law does not know his wife has gambling debts of 300,000 bht, she just pays the interest every month without his knowledge. They/she has no collateral to pay off the debt. He has a low paid government job, he also has just had a brain tumor removed and is now paralyzed down one side. I think the hit-the-fan.gif.pagespeed.ce.6UelFDbFNJ. very soon as the money is owed to not nice people. Now this lady spends even more borrowed money on lottery tickets to try and win to clear the debts. but she never wins. sad.png

PS. I know a lady, was married to a farang, lived in LOS but has a UK passport. She had to escape to the UK and live cos of folk chasing owed money. She divorced the guy, and still lives in the UK chasing bigger money than her ex. sad.png

My wife will occasionally gamble, but it never involves much more than a few hundred baht. She knows when to stop and knows that I won't give her more money to gamble. This is mostly when there is a funeral or some other thing in the village. As long as it stays like that, I don't mind it and I think it is just a fun social thing for her to do. I consider it an entertainment expense, like a night out on the town. As long as it stays like that, I don't think it is a problem.

The ones that get me (and I have met a few) are the ones who gamble to the point that it really affects their day to day living...whether it is cards (usually women) or bets on football matches (usually men). I have been to watch football games and it wasn't even fun, since several guys around were so upset that they were losing. No fun at all.
