City police want bus lanes

BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan traffic police want to enforce use of bus lanes, so that city buses and public transport vehicles get priority on Bangkok streets.

They also want cars with fewer than three occupants banned from entering congested roads, a senior policeman said yesterday.

Bus lanes were first adopted in 1980 and have been tried on several occasions but were never a success in Bangkok because police failed to enforce restrictions on passenger vehicles using bus lanes, Pol Maj General Adul Narongsak said.

Police attempted a high-occupancy vehicle scheme in recent years but motorists opposed to it, so police enforcement of the move lapsed.

The officer said both practices were being studied and the names of Bangkok streets these moves would be undertaken on would be known soon.

He said passenger sedans entering a main street from a soi would have to give way to city buses in designated bus lanes.

And that both practices, if implemented and effectively enforced, would encourage motorists to stop driving and turn to using public transport.

Why not give police officers a commission for traffic law breakers with a percentage of the fine given to them as tea money? That way you still screw law breakers whilst keeping officers actually wanting to do their job. Thai police are obviously corrupt and now we need to get creative in order to still provide them an incentive. Have all officers wear head mounted cameras so all interactions with civilians are recorded.

To get the Police to enforce any laws you first have to ensure they are not criminals themselves, which 80% of them are.

Why not give police officers a commission for traffic law breakers with a percentage of the fine given to them as tea money?

Because they would just continue to enrich themselves illegally with the extra financial incentives.

Just being a policeman like a nurse and fireman is the incentive, THE WANT TO BE, not what you can gain monetary out of it.

The commission should go to the treasury NOT to them, they get their wages and the importance of their work (I am a policeman) Their duty is to help/protect the public and keep general law and order.

They are never money collectors-and never should be. it's NOT their business. (Royal Thai Police)

Another way of corruption buy them from China and charge double the price just like the Chinese tablets.

We already have the highest amount of cameras in a city but nobody actually looks at them or enforces them violation from them probably cause they do not work with the equipment that has been bought.

They should be doing the job that they are being paid for

And right there is the problem. The police do NOT enforce the laws. If the police enforced the actual laws they would have more than enough money in actual fines than they would ever collect in their stupid stop and fine schemes. Just do your damn job and the streets may become safer and less congested.

City police want bus lanes to prevent traffic jams from disrupting public transport.

Officials want cycle lanes to promote a new mode of transport & get cars off the road.

Government needed more votes.. so what did it do?

Give a huge tax incentive for the public to buy more cars... incredible!!

Thai police already get a percentage of every to ticket written. I got told it was 60% but a high ranking Bkk cop said 40%.

But the cop has to wait till end of the month to get his cut. Hence they take cash.

Sent from my phone with the app thingy.

Will passengers have to run the gauntlet through several lanes of moving traffic after alighting the bus to get to the main footpath?

Will would be passengers run even moreso through lanes of moving traffic to get to the bus which is just about to depart?

The main emphasis is on bus lanes, the last thing that want to think about is passengers, they cannot cope with 2 subjects at once, it does their head in.
