BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan traffic police want to enforce use of bus lanes, so that city buses and public transport vehicles get priority on Bangkok streets.

They also want cars with fewer than three occupants banned from entering congested roads, a senior policeman said yesterday.

Bus lanes were first adopted in 1980 and have been tried on several occasions but were never a success in Bangkok because police failed to enforce restrictions on passenger vehicles using bus lanes, Pol Maj General Adul Narongsak said.

Police attempted a high-occupancy vehicle scheme in recent years but motorists opposed to it, so police enforcement of the move lapsed.

The officer said both practices were being studied and the names of Bangkok streets these moves would be undertaken on would be known soon.

He said passenger sedans entering a main street from a soi would have to give way to city buses in designated bus lanes.

And that both practices, if implemented and effectively enforced, would encourage motorists to stop driving and turn to using public transport.

When will Thailand learn that if the police do not enforce the laws then nothing will work regarding traffic control. If I was in charge of the police I would fire 50% for not doing their job, and I would put the other 50% on double super secret probation. The police need to really ticket law breakers with hefty fines when they get caught. Have cameras installed in police vehicles and have 0 tolerance for taking bribe money.

Will they also stop buses stopping in the middle lane to pick up passengers?

So if I had to pick up 3 customers from a hotel to bring them to my company premises I would have to have 2 passengers in the car on the way to pick up the customers.

Apart from rtying to find 2 passengers whoi are willing to waste their time, this would mean that the car would be overloaded for the return journey.

This is Thailand, you always have to give way to buses because they just drive wherever they want regardless.

Besides which, any vehicle entering a main street from a soi should give way to any vehicle (not just buses in designated bus lanes).

Did this senior policeman not know the laws of the road before trying to change them?

Obviously, someone has thought about this very hard (while drinking a bottle of Johnny Black).

To get the Police to enforce any laws you first have to ensure they are not criminals themselves, which 80% of them are.

What they really mean is they want to open up a motorbike autobahn in Bangkok..........Because we all know that if a free bus lane is open, no motorbike, taxi, or any other 10 million impatient drivers will use it because it's a bus only lane.

Just being a policeman like a nurse and fireman is the incentive, THE WANT TO BE, not what you can gain monetary out of it.

The commission should go to the treasury NOT to them, they get their wages and the importance of their work (I am a policeman) Their duty is to help/protect the public and keep general law and order.

Another way of corruption buy them from China and charge double the price just like the Chinese tablets.

We already have the highest amount of cameras in a city but nobody actually looks at them or enforces them violation from them probably cause they do not work with the equipment that has been bought.

There are bus lanes. It is the lane where people park, where people set up tables and have a restaurant, it's the lane where anybody can do anything they want. It's also the lane where you drive the wrong way because you don't want to cross ALL THE WAY over to the other side to be going in the right direction.

And right there is the problem. The police do NOT enforce the laws. If the police enforced the actual laws they would have more than enough money in actual fines than they would ever collect in their stupid stop and fine schemes. Just do your damn job and the streets may become safer and less congested.

To really enforce this they would have to make separate divided bus lanes and have a special raise steel bar so cars are not able to enter,i have seen this work in other countries .

Um......that's exactly how the system works now.

Thai police already get a percentage of every to ticket written. I got told it was 60% but a high ranking Bkk cop said 40%.

But the cop has to wait till end of the month to get his cut. Hence they take cash.

The main emphasis is on bus lanes, the last thing that want to think about is passengers, they cannot cope with 2 subjects at once, it does their head in.

Bus lanes in BKK .............. and who will keep it ??? Every morning in Bangna road highway (under) I meet many motorbikes but they can't be there at all and have to pay 1 000 B fine. But police doesn't care, this means they don't care also. Bus lanes
