I know that some data must be sent back, as that is the norm with any "smart" gadget. But in this article, even opting out of it, it still sends data back to LG servers.

    No place to hide!

    Quite simple - keep a separate thumb drive either blank or containing ONLY non critical data for use in your smart TV. After all, if you can afford a smart TV, surely you can afford a spare thumb drive?
