Sorry if this is a topic which has recently been covered, however, the rules seem to be changing quickly.

I can now confirm the Penang option is closed for Multi non-imm O based on Thai wife.

I’d like to know if there is still the Savannakhet option. I’m due to go for a visa next month and i need somewhere to head to.

Additionally, if anyone has the number of an agent who I can check with before I go in January I would be grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks UbonJoe

In Penang i used to show:

Original marriage cert.

Copy of marriage registration

Copy of both kids birth certs

copy of wife's tabian ban

copy of wifes I.D card

Kasikorn Bank statement with 100,000BHT in it.

Obviously the correct form filled out and a couple of pictures.

Is that the same requierments?

Yes they do issue multiple non-imm "O" with marriage to Thai wife.

Bring your original marriage certificate (The Thai one). I also brought copies of her ID card, The marriage registration copy from the Amphur (this is not the same as the marriage certificate), copy of tabian bahn, and a letter signed by her stating that we live together at the address on her tabian bahn and are still married. She is the housemaster on the TB. All copies signed by her. 5000 baht for the visa (last year).

There are plenty of small offices set up just outside the Consulate who will fill out all the forms for you and arrange photo's etc for the visa for a small fee.

You can walk from many hotels, or rent a bycycle. Savanakhet is that kinda place.

Drop off visa in the morning, pick up next day.

It is a very easy trip to do by yourself and Savanakhet is a really nice place. Bus from Mukhdahan bus-station to the Lao side is easy but you have to queue up to have your passport number recorded. Visa on arrival in Lao is a snap.

Check here again a few days before you go as things may change.

Also you can use your Thai cellphone near the river you just have to select your Thai network manually as the Lao networks are always the strongest.

Thanks guys, and thanks for telling me to check a few days before i go.

Another question which Ubonjoe might recall.

My uk passport is full, so i now have a new blank one. While making enquires on here regading getting out with both passports you told me just show both passports at the airport, the exit stamp would be put in the new one. Do you think this is still the same at Mukdahan immigration?

Sorry to be a pain, but do you know about times to get out of Thailand, and into Laos.

For example, if i get an overnighter from BKK which arrives at Mukdahan at 6, can i got right across the border, or do I have to wait until it opens?

I can only submit docs at the consulate between 9 to 11 AM, and then pick up after 2 PM the next day right?

By the time you get to the bridge from bus station in Mukdahan it will be open. You can take bus from there to Savannakhet that will wait for you at immigration and then take you into town.

At the Mukdahan Friendship bridge Thai immigration put an exit stamp in my old superseded/cancelled passport. I had to return to the Thai immigration office where they apologized and fixed it. From now on all stamps go in your new passport, unless they cancel a visa in the old one.

The mistake is an easy one to make for the officer, and would only be a problem for you if f.x. 4 years from now you have an immigration officer go through every single stamp in your passport. I had this happen to me where they checked every stamp in all 40+ pages. This is just something to keep in mind.

The bridge will definitely be open however the visa on arrival guy starts at 8AM or 9AM (I forget exactly when) and not a minute before his shift starts. I came on an overnighter from Mae Sot and had to wait 40 minutes for him to start work. I just let my bus go on ahead without me which left me stranded briefly. This is what can happen if one takes the first bus from Mukdahan over the bridge. They might have fixed this little glitch by now and if not it's still not a big problem.

After my visa had been issued and the next bus arrived I got on and 10-15 minutes later I was at the Savanakhet bus station with a Lao girl sitting on my knee (The bus was full). If one doesn't want to wait for the next bus there are plenty of Tuk Tuks offering 250-300 baht for the quick trip into town from the bridge. The Savanakhet visa run is as easy as pie. That's why there are no agents doing it, except the Savanh Vegas Casino for about a 1400% markup. (It might be worth it if they include enough free chips for the casino as a perk).

December-January can be chilly, so one shouldn't do as I did and forget to bring a warm jacket. I was shivering cold most mornings.

The tuk-tuks at Savankhet bus station are all 1000cc and they generally don't price gouge. Just communicate to them "Visa Thailand"... they know the drill and will take you to some nearby hotels. If you don't like the price at the hotel make sure to ask them if they have a cheaper room. They often do. I haven't heard of any Tuk-Tuk-hotel-ripoff-farang scams yet in Savanakhet. Relax.

I hope the OP has a great trip. Relax and enjoy, it's a nice place.

Since the bridge now opens at six I suspect Lao visa office may open earlier.

Savan Vegas no longer offers visa run services.

96tehtarp, thanks for the advice, and the sentiment of having a good trip.

I'm just a bit twitchy because I’ve been doing the Penang thing for a while, in fact I’ve never been anywhere else. So it feels like a bit of a head ache at the mo. Sure it'll be fine and I’ll quite like it.

I was looking at the Hoong Tip hotel, building A. Looks like a budget place, but in the town centre. The Vegas looks nice, but seems a long way from anything. I take it there are a few bars and restaurants in the town to keep oneself occupied in the evening.

Hong Tip Hotel is okay but you want the new block of rooms not the old ones, they are terrible. If it is 5 star service the Dao Savanh Resort is the choice. I have stayed at the Soulinsouk Guest House on several occasions and is nice as is the Lena Guest House but not the best for locations.

Thanks to you all.

Going to do the bus, overnight on the 7th of Jan, arive on 8th and sumbmit on same day, pick up on 9th, and come back on the evening of the 10th.

Give myself some time to snoop around, and have an extra day just in case of any issues.

Got 2 kids at home so the idea of having time to myself is very appealing!!

I will book into the Hong Tip Hotel in building A.

I know instructions have been posted regarding no bank statement, but i'll be taking it anyway, they're free to me, but they take a few days to get.

In the ten years i've been living in thailand i know that things regarding visas change overnight. For example, Penang were issuing up until 3 weeks ago, a bod from BKK visited and told them not to issue anymore. Overnight.

I'm guessing it's because a lot of non-imm stickers were found to be missing from K.L, but one never knows, it just could be that a high ranking person has money invested in Savannakhet and wants to put business that way.
