BANGKOK: -- A first encounter after chats on the Web leads to horrible murder; suspect said to have confessed during questioning

A tentative meeting with a new friend met through an Internet chat service, was apparently what led to English teacher Dissanee Thongnarkthae's murder.

Hua Mak Police on Monday night arrested a Pakistani man suspected of killing the Thai woman and dismembering her.

Maj-General Witthaya Kosiyasathit, chief of Metropolitan Police Division 4 who is supervising the case, quoted Mohammad Arif as saying he had killed the victim in a fit of rage after she was rude to him about using someone else's picture during the Internet chat, and lying about his nationality.

According to Arif's confession, Dissanee had demanded that he pay for her air ticket home. "She turned angry when he refused to give her the money, an argument ensued, and the man killed her," said the officer quoting Arif's confession.

The officers said that Arif, now in police custody, initially protested his innocence, despite significant evidence found in his hotel room, including Dissanee's ID card and a large amount of blood.

Major Somphob Lekklang, an investigating officer from Hua Mak station, said Arif then gave conflicting information, by confessing to killing the victim, after joint questioning by Pakistani embassy staff and police investigators, then later retracting his account.

Forensic tests are underway to determine whether the blood found on the premises matches the deceased, whose head, arms and right leg were later found near a petrol station close to the Ratchadaphisek-Lat Phrao intersection. The victim's torso, cut into two halves, was found dumped off Soi Ramkhamhaeng 24 on Monday night.

Acting on a tip-off from a taxi driver, police obtained a search warrant and entered a room at Racha Palace Hotel on Soi Ratchadaphisek 14 where they found Arif, along with evidence including blood in the bathroom and on the carpet of the room, and women's shoes and clothing.

Other items found in the room included a butcher's knife and two chopping knives, a toy pistol and a travel bag with bar-coded tags attached that matched the barcodes on the two travel bags found containing the body parts.

Police said Arif had admitted that the items belonged to Dissanee, whom he claimed that he had sex with the night before, but that she had later disappeared. The police officer said that Arif said he had met Dissanee at an online chat site about a month ago, and that she had travelled to Bangkok on Sunday to meet him at a coffee shop. Police later escorted the suspect to his room at an apartment building in Soi Lat Phrao 23 where they found a pair of jeans soaked with blood.

The Criminal Court approved the arrest warrant and granted custodian authority to Hua Mak police after receiving the initial evidence report.

Witthaya said he believed the police had been lucky, because the unnamed taxi driver who had earlier collected Arif from the hotel, tuned into the Jor Sor 100 traffic radio shortly after the body parts were discovered.

Woman cut to pieces

A Pakistani man was yesterday charged with the murder of an Ubon Ratchathani teacher, cutting up her body and dumping the pieces in two different areas of Bangkok.

On Monday, a woman's torso, hip and left arm were found near a road in the Hua Mak area. Police were still searching for the head, right arm and legs.

Pol Maj-Gen Krisda Phankhongchuen said Muhammad Aris, 34, from Pakistan, was charged by Hua Mak police with the murder of Dissanee Thongnakthae, 28, a teacher at Thessaban 1 School in Phibun Mangsahan district.

Police said the suspect denied the charges despite evidence, including a statement by a taxi driver who said he was hired on Monday by a man who fit Mr Aris' description who took two bags from the Raja Palace Hotel in Huay Kwang and dumped them in two places.

Women's clothes, three knives, blood stains and Ms Dissanee's documents were found in his hotel room, police said. Police believe the teacher and the suspect might have met on the Internet.

I would appear that the "love struck" teacher had paid her own ticket to Bangkok, to be then confronted by somepone who lied about his looks and origin. An all too common occurence in these days of chat sites. A major crackdown on chat sites? :o

Update:

Pakistani held as chat-room killer

BANGKOK: -- Thai police have arrested a Pakistan national as the chief suspect in the murder and dismemberment of a Thai teacher whom he had met through an internet chat service, media reports said on Wednesday.

Bangkok police nabbed Mohammad Arif, 34, Monday night in his room at the Racha Palace Hotel where they found blood stains and various items belonging to the victim, English teacher Dissanee Thongnarkthae, 28, said the mass circulation Thai Rath newspaper.

Arif, after first pleading innocent, eventually confessed to police that he had killed Dissanee in a fit of rage after the woman expressed disappointment that he was not the man he pretended to be on the internet.

"The suspect confessed to raping the victim after he strangled her," Police Major General Witthaya Kosiyasathit told reporters. Arif has also confessed to dismembering Dissanee with a butcher knife and then dumping her body parts near a petrol station.

Dissanee had flown from Ubon Rathcathani, 470 kilometres northeast of Bangkok, on Sunday to meet Arif in the flesh after they had chatted over the internet.

Arif confessed that he had deceived Dissanee by sending her a picture of a handsome man, professing it to be himself, and claimed he was a Spanish national.

He persuaded Dissanee to come to his hotel room on Monday morning, under the pretense of introducing her to the handsome Spaniard.

When Dissanee realized who her internet chat friend was, she was not amused and started to insult Arif, demanding he buy her a return ticket home, prompting the murder, rape and dismemberment.

A taxi driver, who had given Arif a ride on Monday, tipped police off to the suspect's whereabouts, leading to the arrest.

Always an amazing number of confessions ...... is there something magical about being arrested in Thailand that doesn't happen anywhere else? Everywhere else people cry "I am innocent" right up until they get the needle .... here ... well ... 3 hours - 3 days in police custody and it seems like 95% cry "I am guilty!"`

I spoke to a Thai about the speed of some confessions.

He had done time for murder(bought himself out after 1 year :o )the police hung him upside down and beat the soles of his feet so hard that they broke most of the bones in his feet.

He made a full confession.

This a**hole lives. or lived in the same condominium that I and my wife do, just four floors up.

I saw him just three or four days ago using the computer in the lobby for his internet connection.

He evidently killed the girl at the mentioned location, but actually lived nearby where I live. I guess the quick admittance of guilt came from the fact that they found her ID card, gold chain and hand phone at his condo where I live and they found his pass card with his room number on the front and accessed his room where I live about 10:00 PM on Monday night.

Thats always amazed me too. In the UK, it would be a no comment interview and a not guilty plea, unless you had 100% incriminating evidence, and even then some of them still deny it.

Then again, in the UK, suspect interviews are at the very least recorded on audio, and quite often on video, and the custody areas are usually under video surveillance so you dont have the opportunity of a 'little chat'. Cant imagine its the same here.

Murdered her and THEN raped her? :o

These guys are made of strange stuff.

My heart goes out to the family of the lady at this time.

Everyone I know who uses these chat rooms lies about themselves. It's no place for a respectable lady to be looking for friends. Far too many conmen and trouble makers looking to prey upon the unsuspecting IMO. I hope the thai ladies are made aware of this terrible crime and use due caution about who they meet on the web.

this whole thing is deeply disturbing, a young woman was brutally murdered then raped and just for good measure cut up into bits and dumped by the roadside, if this was my daughter or sister I'd gladly do time for this phucker, i'd say this is not his first victim

my thoughts are with her family and friends

Chatline murderer pens confession on killing girl

The Pakistani man who admitted to killing a Thai woman and dismembering her body yesterday wrote a confession to the crime.

Mohammad Arif said he had volunteered his confession and other information mainly because he did not want to create any further work for the police working on the murder case.

In his confession he said he killed the victim, Dissanee Thongnarkthae, by smothering her with a pillow and then strangling her, before dismembering her.

Arif also said that prior to the murder he and Dissanee had had sexual intercourse three times and that Dissanee invited him to go to Pattaya but he refused because of the cost.

Investigators from Hua Mark Police Station also instructed Arif to carry out a re-enactment of his alleged crime. Lt-Colonel Somphob Thunpholngarm said the police investigation into the case would be completed soon.

Arif appeared distressed in the detention facility at the station and occasionally talked with other inmates in Thai. A sergeant on duty said he had asked the Thai inmates to keep a close eye on Arif in case he attempted to hurt himself or commit suicide.

Earlier in the morning a travel bag containing the deceased's left leg and left foot were found floating in a canal near the location where the first bag containing body parts, including both arms and a right leg, were found. :o:D:D

Grisly murder sparks fears over web-dating

Internet users are being warned of the dangers of web-dating following the grisly murder of a school teacher apparently by someone she met on the internet.

Thaweesilp Visanuyothin, the Department of Mental Health spokesman, said most of the information exchanged in cyber chatrooms is made to appeal to chatters, especially women.

''Chatting allows people to be what they want to be. People use sweet words and some people will fall for that, especially those new to cyber chatrooms,'' he said.

But Mr Thaweesilp said chatting should not be banned but chatters should be more aware of the possible dangers.

The spokesman also warned chatters not to meet their chatmates alone if they decide to meet face-to-face and that they should meet in open areas.

The warning came after the dismembered body of Disanee Thongnaktae, 28, a teacher at Poh Khlang school in Ubon Ratchathani's Phibun Mangsahan district, was found.

Muhammad Arif, a 33-year-old Pakistani national, was arrested on Tuesday, one day after a tip-off from a taxi driver who picked him up from Raja Palace Hotel in Huay Kwang.

Taxi driver Boonyuen Sriprasong, 38, said he had listened to a radio station which reported human body parts had been found near where he had dropped off Mr Arif. The suspect's description also matched that of the foreign passenger.

The taxi driver then called his brother, a policeman at Hua Mak station to ask for information, and filed a report with police.

He was later asked to go to the hotel which he later saw the suspect walk out from and he then told the police.

Pol Lt Gen Viroj Chantarangsi, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said Mr Arif admitted to killing the woman refused to reveal his motive.

Circumstantial evidence suggested that the murder had been planned, he added.

Police found some of the victim's body parts on Monday. They were dumped on a road in the Hua Mak area.

The rest of the body parts, stuffed in a suitcase, were found in a canal yesterday.

Pavinee Nakthongtae, the victim's sister, said Disanee was an avid chatter but she told her family whom she was contacting.

''We warned her that it could be her if there was news about people being murdered by chatmates,'' she said.

or just the Paki's getting beaten down

Who cares where he is from. Such a horrendous crime deserves punishment. Too bad he can't be dismembered and deposited in various trash containers around the city.

To take the side of a brutal murderer such as he appears to be, because he comes from a country you favor, really shows a complete lack of objectivism .

Are you saying because he's Islamic its allright to commit such acts? Because the Quran allows the slaughter of non Islamics? That when meeting a non Islamic you have three choices enslave, convert, or kill, and he chose kill and that makes it ok.

Really I don't get the beating down Pakis remark or am I reading too much into your inane sentence.

Very sad for the family of the lady. My condolences to friends and family.

As you say, very sad indeed, un-necessary waste, a bit of naivete and, sad to say, too much trust. I know some kids at that school, and my mum-in-law knows her vaguely. A big shock.

Whoa there mogoso, I think you mis-read jdinasia's point :o markuk made the comment that maybe one reaction to this incident would be a crack down on chat sites - jdinasia's remark was (IMHO) that another reaction might be a racist response directed towards Pakistanis. His remark was not racist at all, just the opposite in fact. Not an inane sentence, but an observation on the unfortunate reaction that too often occurs after an incident like this when the perpetrator is one of certain nationalities or races. :D
