Hi,

I'm looking for a getaway vacation from Bangkok and someone suggested to me Koh Kood.

My wish list is:

A beautiful island and beaches with some good diving and snorkeling

Peace and quiet with a little night life but definitely not too many tourists

Not too difficult to get to from Bangkok

How does Koh Kood measure up? Anyone been? What's your impression?

Cheers for any info

plan on at least 6 hour in bus land/boat travel plus waiting connections. probably need an overnight in trat. dont know how often the ferry goes.

You talk of ease of travel from BKK.

Look into Tiger Ferry Lines, fly into Phuket, get to Rasada pier where I think they go out of and yes, you have Koh Muk and Koh Kood on the docket. Good people at Koh Jum Beach Villas also.

Otherwise Krabi and ground to Trang or similar ground and ferry while you might as well have gone out of Phuket.

It's possible to fly to Trat. Then how long connection to the pier for boat and trip to Koh Kood?

Cheers

As I understand it you're toast on boats from Laem Sok Pier (trat) after 1pm.

So if your flight doesn't make that connect, welcome to downtown Trat for the night, do it the next morning.

Consider working backwards and let the place you are staying advise.

I have heard good things about Koh Lipe recently...... (fly to Hat Yai, taxi to pier, boat to Lipe?)......but I don't think any night life????

You could fly to Trat, and take the bus to the pier to get the 1PM speedboat, but if they have changed the flight times, it might no longer be possible.

As another poster has stated, you could overnight in Trat, then take the morning speedboat, about 9am I think, but will need to arrange a taxi to the pier.

Before, I have taken an early limousine service from BKK in order to catch the 1pm boat. Some of the resorts in KK can sort this for you.

The diving that I did around Koh Kood was not particularly good.

The last time I was there (3 years ago), the nightlife was still non-existent. Even going out for dinner if you didn't want to eat at your resort used to mean eating at another resort, as there were no restaurants, except one small pizza place, but that has probably changed now.

Also, they had torn a new road around the island through the forest, (sad to see), so perhaps more expansion now.

For me, it was a place to relax, do nothing except read a book and swim.

I did notice a lot of Russians seem to stay in the southern end resorts.

Regarding Koh Lipe, when I first went there many years ago, it was idyllic, certainly no nightlife, but now I think it gets pretty busy, as the boats are packed with young backpackers, and a look on the web shows lots of accommodation has sprouted up. Check out Pooh's Bar for nightlife. Again, diving not that great. But a great beach.

i went to Koh lipe in October. Air Asia and nok air both offer flight/bus/boat tickets to the island. It's 6 hours or so travelling in all.

One flies into Trat, the other into Hat yai, either way the overland takes about 1hr 45.

We stayed on Sunrise beach at a nice resort (low season prices). The beach was excellent, with great snorkelling. Clownfish (nemos) everywhere! just metres from the beach. Snorkel further out around the 2 small islands off the beach there is a drop off with good coral and plenty of fish; we saw sea snakes, eels, lionfish etc.

I didn't dive, but there are lots of dive shops, and many dive spots.

As for nightlife, there are quite a few bars and restaurants (some closed whilst we was there) but it wasn't very busy at the time. I could see that it would be more lively in high season, but not overly so, as the island just isn't that big - no tailors, no ATM even....

Pattaya beach is touted as the main beach, but its a sandy sheltered bay so, probably good for kids swimming, but no good for snorkelling.

For a couple of days we hired a long tail and went to various spots in the Tarutao marine park. More snorkelling, picnic on a deserted beach, relaxing...It was great!

I'll be going back smile.png

Edit!! Sorry it doesn't relate to Koh Kood in anyway, but another poster mentioned Lipe as an alternative, so I chimed in
