Suthep announces Saturday meeting with armed forces commanders

BANGKOK, 13 December 2013 (NNT) – People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) leader Suthep Thueksuban announced on Thursday that the heads of the armed forces and the supreme commander have agreed to allow him to meet them to explain the PDRC's push for the setting up of a "people's council"

Royal Thai Police Spokesman Piya Uthayo disclosed on Thursday that national police chief Adul Saengsingkaew confirmed protest leader Suthep Thueksuban had requested a meeting with him to explain the PDRC's resons for its rally. According to the spokesman, Police General Adul declined such meeting because as an enforcer of the law, he was bound to act cautiously. Police Major General Piya added that the national police chief had talked with the commanders of the armed forces and the supreme commander, and they had asserted they would maintain a similar standpoint.

Later on Thursday, Mr. Suthep announced during a speech to protesters that the military top brass had given permission for him to meet with them and explain the details of the "people's council" at 3 pm on Saturday, although the venue had yet to be confirmed.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Suthep and other leaders of the PDRC met with 7 private sector organizations to explain its proposal to set up the so-called "people's council".

Thai military heads agree to meet protest leader at weekend
BY AMY SAWITTA LEFEVRE

(Reuters) - The heads of Thailand's powerful military agreed on Thursday to a weekend meeting with the leader of the movement seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, deepening uncertainty about the country's immediate political future.

Yingluck has called a snap election for February 2, but that has done nothing to satisfy a protest group that wants an unelected leadership to run the country, aware that a nationwide vote would likely return another government controlled by the premier's divisive billionaire brother, Thaksin Shinawatra.

The armed forces issued a statement late on Thursday saying it had invited protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban to join the heads of the army, navy and air force at a seminar on Saturday "to find a way out for Thailand". The supreme commander would be the mediator and other "stakeholders" would join, it said, without elaborating.

All you have to do now Dear Leader is tell the Armed Forces and Supreme Leader that they have agreed to meet you. Just in case you haven't heard Lord Suthep but they are denying it.

He is desperate and sees his plan to own Thailand crumbling as his flock leave him so he has to spread these rumours in an attempt to keep his sheep. The guy is a total nutcase and the people are starting to see it.

You might want to read the article more carefully before typing.

So Suthep's saying they are going to meet, and the other heads involved say they are keeping out of it. Wait and see who's telling the truth then I guess.

He played this card once, and lost face. How many times he will play the same game? Tired of his nonsense.

When Suthep the great tells the military he wants to tell them about the PDRP (of which he has promoted himself to secretary general no less) I think what he means is, tell them about HIS PDRP. I guess ultimately if he achieves his dreams of dictatorship it won't impact any of us farangs living here. Except if we try to sell our homes or if any are involved in the tourism industry, or want to convert baht into a hard currency

As I understand it Suthep don´t want new elections because he thinks PTP buys their votes (which the Dems probably does just as much) so there can´t be fair elections.

But surely with an election coming up 2nd of february there wont be time to "buy all votes" or?

If I may add some balance here.

Police General Adul declined such meeting because as an enforcer of the law, he was bound to act cautiously.

Purely speculative but can't help wondering if it's simply a case that he has received his payoff from Yingluck and chosen his side already. On 4th December the Bangkok Post reported that 3 million baht was handed out to the police guarding government house and the bridge and Toopkrajang as he handed it out was telling them it was a present from Yingluck. Bloody hilarious that even the government has to bribe the police to do their job. No telling how many other bribes PT have secretly given out behind the scenes is there....And I won't add the last bit I was going to as I don't want to be sued...

Anti-govt leaders to meet top brass tomorrow, firm on political reform
By English News

BANGKOK, Dec 13 – Thailand’s top brass has agreed to meet with anti-government protest leaders tomorrow to discuss resolutions to the political conflicts.

Suthep Thaugsuban, secretary general of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), expressed appreciation to leaders of the three armed forces and national police bureau for agreeing to the meeting.

He will possibly be accompanied by 40 PDRC executives for the dialogue.

Suthep admitted that he underestimated Ms Yingluck Shinawatra, caretaker prime minister, and had never thought that she would be so stubborn.

Mr Suthep and PDRC core members held talks with representatives from seven private organisations at a Bangkok hotel yesterday to clarify the protesters’ movement and objectives to reform Thailand for stability and people’s well-being.

He told the businessmen that the Yingluck government has become illegitimate by rejecting the Constitution Court’s ruling while people no longer trusted legislators who proposed bills to whitewash wrongdoers.

He said Ms Yingluck and her ministers had no choice but to relinquish their caretaker status, but proposed no names of replacements.

“There’ll be a few days of vacuum but we still have the Senate. Senate Speaker Nikom Wairatpanich, a worshipper of the Thaksin regime, must quit, leaving the deputy speaker to propose a suitable person for His Majesty’s endorsement before taking office,” he said.

He said the proposed people’s council will comprise 400 members – 300 of whom represent different professions and occupations and 100 others from academia.

He invited the opposing Red Shirt faction to join the reform, reassuring that it would be neither for the benefit of politicians nor the Democrat Party.

The former Democrat MP asked the private sector for support while insisting that an election must not be held unless a political reform is completed.

“The people’s council must genuinely represent the [diverse] peoples. Council members must not be attached to political parties. We still have time to discuss the people’s council. At this stage, we should concentrate on eliminating the Thaksin regime,” he said. (MCOT online news)

I think he is trying to achieve some kind of governing body that does not include any Shinawatra clan member or influencer. Perhaps a noble aim. But the idea of an appointed body is just riddled with dangers for corruption and misuse of power. More importantly, it does nothing to further the use of democratic means to eliminate undesirable governments.

Why oh why couldn't they have just let the government be judged by its track record in two years time, and if no good, get voted out of power. This short term " fix" on the Shinawatra clan just keeps the same dynamic in place.

Now it is clear. The anti-democratic protest leader Suthep - wanted for treasery and murder - makes common things with the army, it is a hidden coup by the army. He refuses new elections because it's clear that they will loose. Suthep and his gang bring dark days to Thailand's future, without democracy. Whyle other countries in the area step forwards, Thailand goes back to dictatorship and may be military rule. Bad for the economy, bad for tourism, bad for the currency, bad for the Thai people.

There's an "uncle" position vacant in North Korea, I heard. Perhaps, Suthep can apply there.

No , the uncle position is not good enough for the guy he wish the leader position ( he start reminding me to a simpel austrian house-painter in the years 1930 to 1939 who also achieved many followers .....)sad.png

I've more chance of meeting them. They're always on the golf course on Saturdays - in a 6-ball in front of me.

Not according to Reuters, Jimmy. Looks like you'll have an easier round of golf - unless they're all playing in a tournament first, before sorting it all out in the 19th !

Th Red Shirts are also going to be at the same meeting with the military brass, the Bangkok Post reports, that should be interesting- Suthep and the red shirts in the same room, I think the military mediators are gonna wind up holding the two groups back from getting into a brawl, other than that nothing will be accomplished. Suthep's stupid plan is unworkable and military cannot change that. You have 2 groups here, one that wins the elections and one that looses. Abhisit and Yingluck cannot be prime minister at the same time. Suthep's claim that the 'people's council' will not really be tantamount to the Democrat losers taking control of the government from the elected majority is not reality. The PAD.PDRC is the opposition to the PhuaThai party and the Democrat party has self destructed.. so at th end of the day Yingluck is PM, the democratic constitution that is currently in place prevents violent mobs from taking over the government undemocratically.

and of cource the military knows that sacking the elected PM and replacing her with an appointed person will bring the Red Shirts back out onto the streets demanding a new election-so it doesn't resolve the crises it just makes it worse, so why should they do it?

suthep-3-728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Anti-Thaksin protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban last night thanked the Supreme Commander for hosting the public forum to allow the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) to clarify its stand and purposes to the armed forces leaders and the private sector at its headquarters on Saturday.

Suthep, who is secretary-general of the PDRC, disclosed the latest stance of the Armed Forces to his requested meeting with military top brass at the address to supporters at the Democracy Monument.

He expressed appreciation to Gen Tanasak Patimaprakorn, the Supreme Commander, for allowing him to have the chance to meet and talk to the top brass of the armed forces, including commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, at the public forum hosted by the Armed Forces tomorrow.

He said he and PDRC core members would go to the forum.

He also admitted that he has underestimated caretaker prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and never thought she was too stubborn to his call for her to step down from the caretaker role to pave the way for smooth democratic reform.

Suthep and all protest leaders will give a “Meet the Press” press conference at 10.30 a.m. today to answer all questions at a conference themed “Reform of Thailand.”

A large number of both local and foreign media are attending the conference.
