Can Canadian passport holder get the border pass to cross to Huay Xai Laos For just a few hoursVisit

My husband and I plan to cross the New Friendship bridge from Chiang Khong to Huay Xai for a few hours, just to look around. My husband has Canadian passport and I have Thai passport. Our thai driver has only THai ID card without any passport. Thks to Shawn for the information about the crossing at the border. Here are some questions I have. Hope someone can help us with the answers.

-Does anyone know if we can drive across the bridge? If so how much will it cost?
-Can our thai driver still get the border pass at this new fFriendship Bridge allowing hime to stya in Laos for up to 3 days with his thai ID car
-Can my husband who hols the Canadian passport get the border pass as well, again we just want to viist Huay Xai for a few hours. He got the tourist Visa form Vancouver to stay in Thailand for over 60 days. So if he has the Thai immigration exit stamped in his passport at the Friendship Thai Immigration, the exit stamp will then cancel his 60days tourist visa and can only stay in Thailand for another 15 days which won't work out for us since we will be in Thailand for another 4 weeks after Chiang Khong. Any suggestions on this and how much cost associated. We have to weigh if it's worthwhile to cross to Huay Xai just for a few hours.

Thanks

Thks so much

You'll have no problems but forget the car as it's a big hassle with insurance etc and certainly not worth taking for your short trip.

You'll be stamped out of Thailand and Canadian's get a visa on arrival which is around $40 depending on the exchange rate.

I'd suggest an overnight stop as it's a shame to go so far and just try and have a few hours there.

Given the cold wet miserable weather in Vancouver at this time of the year tell him 24 hours to explore somewhere new is worth it.

However he'll only get a 15 day re entry to Thailand unless he has a multi entry O visa.

Why not continue to Luang Prabang then fly back to Chiang Mai where he'll get a 30 day visa?

Cost is around $160 per person with Laos Airlines.

If the new 30 day entry is not enough for the remainder of your trip he could get a re-entry permit from any immigration office that would keep the remainder of his 60 entry valid. Cost is 1000 baht.

Canadian nationals, not holding a visa, now get 30 days on arrival at a land border crossing into into Thailand, it was changed last month.

Thanks for that as I missed it.

BANGKOK: -- Royal Thai Immigration Bureau has confirmed to Thaivisa.com that holders of passports of UK, USA, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and Italy are since November 1, 2013 given 30 days at land borders instead of previously only 15 days.
