Some very salient point there but a little dramatic, we should all be aware that these are ambit claims and in the unlikely event Suthep's plan bears fruit the outcomes would bear little resemblance. If wiser and cooler heads prevailed.

You would hope so. But it seems there is no middle ground in Thai politics, you're either in or your dead. Interesting about the defense minister should be a military man. That would be a very bad move and further legitimize the military role in government. Even more interesting is that only one person in Thailand can appoint anyone above the rank of Colonel.

A lot of farangs see this guy as Thailand's Messiah, the chosen one who has come forth to save Thailand.

1995 As part of the Sor Por Kor 4 -01 land reform scheme, Suthep gave title deeds to 592 plots of land in Khao Sam Liam, Kmala and Nakkerd hills of Phuket provience to 489 farmers. It was later found out that the members of 11 wealthy families in Phuket were among the recipients. Suthep addressed a huge crowd in his Surit Thani constituency a month before a nocofidence debate and called on his supporters to March on Bangkok in the hudreds of thousands to defend his reputation. The scandle led Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai of the Democrat Party to dissolve the House of Representatives in July 1995 in order to avoid the no cofidence debate. In subsequent elections, the Nation Party won a majority, leading to the downfall of Chuan Leepai's Democrat Party led government.

2009 Suthep was accused of violating the Constitution of Thailand by holding equity in a media firm that had recieved concessions from the government. Under the 1997 Constitution of Thailand, which Suthep has supported, Members of Parliment are banned from holding stakes in companies which have recieved government consessions. In July 2009 the election commission announced that it would seek a ruling by the constitutional court to disqualify Suthep.

Suthep held a press conference a day later, announcing his decision to resign from parliament. Suthep's resignation as an MP did not affect his status as a Deputy Prime Minister and as a Cabinet member. If his case had been submitted to the Constitution Court, he would have been suspended from duty as Deputy Prime Minister. He insisted his resignation was not proof that he had done anything wrong but that he was worried about status as Deputy Prime Minister.

So maybe he should be the first in line for the firing squad, but I am sure he would only want the death term, once he has gained complete control with his latest attempted coup!

Thanasak said although police and military officials had been instructed not to use arms against the people, he worried that that third ill-intentioned group may take advantage of the situation to create a scene.

Methinks the man saw right through that last salespitch.

Suthep insisted that before the general election is held the caretaker government must step down to pave way for an interim government to run the country temporarily while the people's council must be established to implement reform. He vowed that after the reform is completed, he would wash his hands of politics.

The death penalty is just a tad extreme, but a lot of other things that have been proposed "could" work out well "if" they were implemented in the right way. Sad to say I just don't see it happening now.

Whilst I never particularly liked Suthep (as he's just as corrupt as the Shinawatra's), I and many others supported the "ideals" (in principle) he was claiming when the protests originally started, however now, he's pushing people away in droves as it's getting far too extreme and despotic.

It's time for there to be a legitimate "3rd" party here, it's long overdue and I'm amazed that it hasn't happened as yet. Something a bit more "in the middle" perhaps, rather than the extremes that we tend to see all the time. We live in hope.

The only good part of this is that at last some of the Thai people are beginning to realise and publicly acknowledge that corruption is rampant within the Government, even if they are confused as to ways of dealing with it.

Who knows? Perhaps some good may come out of these political disputes, there maybe hope yet.

This is an excellent idea, and Khun Suthep has clearly thought it through carefully. If such a scenario were to be enacted, it would have massive positive implications for the Thai economy.

Just think of the job creation possibilities... rope makers, carpenters to make the gallows and coffins, extra judges and court officials, jailers..... the list goes on. The only downside I can see is that the number of cremations will add to global climate change badly (deforestation for fuel and the burning thereof)...instead of the February/march smog in Chiang Mai, we could be choking all year round.....

Of course, without so many corrupt politicians, a bit more money might actually reach the projects that need it, but that is where this post goes into the realms of fantasy.....

A death sentance seems a little over the top. Thailand already has in place laws and fines for corruption for those giving and those receiving. The fines, prison terms could stand some tweaking, but the asset seizure part (already in place) will get all parties attention.

Now if you want the latter to even start to work you have to compensate and protect the whistle blowers, snitches, or what ever name you use. Then just to eliminate the driver, butler, maid being assigned the asset, ban for life any political activity/office as well as any government paid, approved or financed business. Money, wealth is the god these people worship, set a few examples by making them and all family member, paupers and the first battle of the war will be won.

Indeed, he is full of hot air but if he can force change i'm happy enough. Politicians should be punished much more and better then is the case now. Statue of limitations should also be gone. But as Arthur has said already there are already good anti corruption laws they only need to be used.

But new laws making sure politicians play by the rules and a body that really enforces them is the way to go.

Very very dangerous man indeed. He is obviously stating that he wants the Shin's dead as I doubt very much he is considering the death sentence for himself. So if he get's his way, Thailand will see a massive rise in death penalties issued - but I fear not for actual corruption charges - more like political opponents.

As for the rest, there are some good points, but then so did Hitler and Mussolini have a couple of good points to start off with and look at how that all ended up!

Well the death penalty for corruption by politicians was how China first dealt with the problem. The public execution of a senior Minister for corruption soon eradicated the problem, or at least pushed it much much further underground. In fact most of Sutheps rants are pretty 'Chinese' in a way. I commend him for taking what appears to be a harsh and serious stance against the cancer that holds this country back, but as the old saying goes 'It ain't what you do it's the way that you do it' !

I am not sure having ex Military men as Minister of Defence is a good idea either. As ex Military my experience would show that favouritsm/nepotism would be just as bad and you need someone to make impartial decisions whilst being advised by Military Experts.

My comments on here have gone down 75% since this started, It's too much hassle keeping up. Let them get on with it, life is not affected one iota where I live and the baht continues to weaken against the major currencies. happy days!
