I always leave my camera and netbook either in plain view or in a drawer that the maid has access to. She dusts round it all and carries on to the next room... So you assume people are of certain types and have certain traits according to their race and you treat them accordingly. And have you ever heard the saying; appearances can be deceptive? I am also making assumptions, one is that you are the owner of this minus zero star guesthouse. It appears that the thief has better principles than you, because at least she admitted who and what she is. You have attitude pal, full of your own importance and arrogant. I think you'll find that, if it was proved to be a hotel employee, and the police had been involved, confirmed the amount, and the employee fired, that the hotel would have compensated the victims (if they didn't have travel insurance). A different matter for a theft from the room where it was a non-employee, or possibly where they think the reported amount has been "padded". Did your friend check the maid's references? As moving the camera prior to taking the money would suggest it wasn't an impulse theft. That might also suggest she may have stolen previously... Thai culture is extremely judgmental and superficial when it comes to personal appearance. Something like a piece of gold or type of trousers can cause a major difference in how a Thai person reacts to a person. Definitely in a western country it's PC to not to judge a book by it's cover. I hope that this opinion will moderate over time. The more I get to know (and work to truly understand) Thais the more I like them. Some are indeed shallow, just as I know shallow people where I come from, but I don't base my opinion of them on the actions of the worst.
