HONG KONG: -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s nephew, who is now studying in France, has gone under the radar after the execution of Pyongyang’s No 2 man, reported South Korean media.

On December 14, two days after the high-profile purge of Kim Jong-un's uncle Jang Song-thaek, 19-year-old Kim Han-sol’s name had been removed from the post box in his dormitory at the prestigious Sciences-Po’s Le Havre campus, reported one of South Korea’s major dailies DongA Ilbo.

When a South Korean reporter visited Kim’s dormitory a day earlier, on December 13, his name had still been on the mailbox; the reporter also knocked on Kim’s room but it seemed deserted, said the paper.

Last Friday, the South Korean journalist who visited Kim’s dormitory was questioned by five French police officers after they were notified by students. [read more...]

Actually his schoolmates and teachers were interviewed some time ago. They reportedly said that he lacked self-control and harbored delusions of grandeur and a violent streak.

On behalf of the rest of the world, could we respectfully request that the CIA not take up your suggestion. The trouble is that in interfering in other countries often leads to worse outcomes for the locals and the region and it is non-Americans (as in the rest of the world) that pays the price and suffers - Afghanistan, Iraq, South Africa (the alleged betrayal of Nelson Mandela by a CIA man who told the then racist regime where to find Mandela), many countries in central and South America etc. Even in cases where you think that the leader is terrible, unless the population is ready and wants a revolution, the chances are that intervening will do worse rather than better. If you think that Kim Jong-Un is bad, there is always a worse one to take his place in such a rotten regime.

Only if there is a real insurrection against a bloodthirsty dictator should the CIA even think of intervening. Syria, for example. And then, if it is to be done, it should be done quickly by providing aid and arm to people who are not likely to destabilize the region or bring about a worse regime. Otherwise leave well alone.

Interesting also that the many sanctions imposed on North Korea apparently do not include the ability of members of the ruling junta to move substantial amounts of money to France (and other countries) for the education of their precious offspring (and other equally noble purposes, like property purchase in Paris.

Nobody accused the French of letting international condemnation get in the way of promoting the desperate survival of the French language as an international lingua franca.

I find it hard to find any sympathy for 'uncle' (or any of fatso's family) as I'll wager they've all abused their position in the past and have offed plenty of people themselves to enhance their positions in the party..

I recall reading, back when we were almost at a stand off with them, that the uncle was in charge and the level headed one that might be able to keep chubby short boy with funny haircut from lobbying missiles in the wrong direction or doing something that actually crossed the line into causing conflict. If true, this may not bode too well for that mess of a country.
