Looking for the name of a village 30KM outside of Kalasin

Featured Replies

Hello all - In November I spend around 30 days in a small village outside of Kalasin. I believe it was west or North West of Kalasin. I'm not 100% sure since Kalasin was the first sign I would see in Arabic letters and not Thai script. I do not speak any Thai and the only English communication I had was with my friend who I met in Bangkok and got her to bring me back to her village.

The village name sounded like Bomtum? If anyone knows of this village and can help me find it on a map I would greatly appreciate it. I believe the population is around 1200 people, this knowledge was gained by asking a village elder through a monk who spoke a little English so not sure of the accuracy.

I wish I had more photos but my phone was misplaced in someone else's pocket in Bangkok.

Why not use goggle maps and try to find it?

Btw your pics are of no use as nearly all rural isaan looks like that.

Quite a desparate job. Not a trace I found. Pictures are worthless.

Next time if you stay somewhere in Thailand: at least the major roads have clearly marked numbers.

Helps a lot to know which road number you where close to, maybe crossection with other roads.

GOOGLE Earth would work better.

Holy Shit dude, I could go into almost every rice farm within 100 miles of my house and the pictures would like like that. Think you're on a loser with this one, but good luck

Bua Bon northwest about 12 km. Closest I can see from your name. The are a bunch of villages not named. Many probably don't have signs but the locals have a name for every square meters, it seems.

A cautionary tale here. As most of us who live here know, Thai's, Geography, Maps & Directions don't really go together. A Dutch guy visiting his girlfriend, after a few beers decided he needed a refill and drove the motorbike into the nearest town with a Lotus. It's now dark, he's hopelessly lost. Can't remember or at least pronounce the name of the gf's village. Eventually after accosting multiple folk he's brought to my house to at least be able to speak English. The following two hours, if it weren't so tragic would have been hillarious. We had about a dozen people in the house, the cops, all trying to figure out where it was he was from. Eventually, we collectively in something which wouldn't have been misplaced in a National Lampoon movie decide to escort him on the motorbike, caravan style to the outskirts of town. Sheer luck the gf was parked on the edge of town, also trying to look for the errant bf. The village in question ended up being less than 10km from us, even something that close was baffling to find.

as it was mentioned by other,Google Earth is the way to go,

I was able to find my MIL house by following the road from KKC just as If I was driving there,

Did the same with my sisters home in Greece, we tried looking for it but we could not find it, so we found a known point and followed the roads as if we were driving there, sure enough there it was we could see her car in the drive way.smile.png

So if you remember how to drive to this place from Kalasin, start from there and follow the roads.

Thank you to those who provided any help.

Does Village 96 mean anything? I do remember seeing a visa application with what i thought wad an address but most of it was in Thai script.

Village 96, Kalasin district was the only Arabic letters I recognized.

One of the problems with Google Earth is, not all satellite pictures are created equal. The resolution for Thailand outside of major cities goes down hill pretty rapidly, and also the updates. I built my house 6 years ago, and as far as Google Earth is concerned is still open land. You can also be very hard pressed to recognize any landmarks other than major roads.

True but...

in both instances I mentioned it worked for me,

Give it a try, what you have to loosesmile.png you might not find your exact property if it was build recently, but you could find the village. then you could mark the GPS position of the village, or pin it and always know where it is.

Excuse my ignorance and straying off topic but why are there signs in Arabic in Kalasin?

He means Thai Script clearly, thats just a 'lost in translation' thingy

He means Arabic numbers and romanized letters (e.g. English).

I am not sure what he means,

there are Arabic numerals and Romanized letter on signs almost everywhere in Thailand

My apologies for not being more clear. While in the village I did not see any Arabic numerals and Romanized letters on signs. It wasn't until leaving the village I started to see them again, which helped as I am totally lost with Thai script. The city sign for Kalasin was the first sign outside the village I noticed with the Roman letters so it was the first time I could get my bearings.

Its ok mate , just having a little harmless fun at your expensesmile.png

I dont really know why, but in my village near Khon Kaen also the signs are in Thai squiggles with which I have as much success as you,, once outside the village on the main road I see the Thai and Romanisized signs

maybe the signs at the village are more for locals and or are purchased and installed by different agencies.
